I have been surfing with Opera Mini on my droid phone for the last week, and really like it. I have it set up just the way I want it to.

I saw earlier today, that there is another Opera browser for Android (not the Mini).

Not sure why two different browsers are being developed for one platform, but regardless, can someone give me a brief explanation of the main differences?

I don't use the droid phone much for browsing, just to a few forum sites when I'm waiting for business/errands around town to get taken care of. 99% of my browsing is on my laptop. So I just want adblocking, quick page loads, that's about it.

Mini uses Opera's servers to pre-render and then compress the page, meaning the Mini client you install is really only half a browser and thus is great for devices with limited memory. However, certain types of dynamic content may not render properly in Mini.

Opera browser for Android is a full web browser that will work without access to Opera's servers (though if you enable data savings it will go through their servers for compression) and thus should be able to render any content that Android's version of Chrome can. But it uses more resources on your device and is a larger install.

Fair enough. I really don't need dynamic content, at least not for anything I view on my droid. Sounds like Opera is doing me a favor by compressing data, so I'll just go with that. If i notice sites that just don't work, I'll install another browser.

          Thanks.

Current version of Mini uses Android's Webview to render pages when in High Mode. In Extreme Mode it works like the original Opera Mini that render the page on the server and send you a snapshot of the page.

Thanks, that's good to know. Right now, apart from the news page that I don't want, I think all my settings are default, and if I don't experience a problem, I'll keep it that way. But its good to know what those options mean.

                Other differences are:

                • Opera for Android has a functional word wrap, which automatically scales a zoomed page to fit the screen in a readable way, while Opera Mini does not support this feature (when you zoom a text you see only a portion of the whole text) due to the webview engine.
                • Only Opera Mini has night mode.
                • In Opera for Android you can import individual folders from other synchronized Speed Dials but not a Speed Dial, in Opera Mini you can import a Speed Dial but not individual folders.
                • Only in Opera Mini you can put multiple words with the help of the arrow into the search field before hitting "search".
                • Only in Opera for Android you can create your own search engine.
                • Only in Opera for Android you can set your prefered search engine.
                • Only in Opera for Android you can block third-party cookies.

@sgunhouse Downvoting your post because no longer true by default per @leocg. This thread is a top result for googling "opera mini vs opera touch"...
