Opera keeps downloading something in background

Opera browser on my machine is constantly downloading some from IP: 151.101.24.193
Can someone confirm what is causing this, at this rate it will exhaust all my usage limit on my data plan

Seems kind of peculiar. When I look up the IP it gives Perimeter Technologies which produces user installed "pet fences." Why they would be interested in intercepting stuff off your machine I have no clue. Maybe someone stuck some kind of prank extension on your browser?

All I can suggest is if you have any extensions disable one at a time until the traffic stops. If it doesn't stop then the problem is not an extension. Process of elimination is all I can suggest.

How did you find it? Here I couldn't find any domain associated to that IP.

Anyway I think it's related to one of the Opera's services because I could see a connection to a similar address at home.

Hmm. Here (in the eastern US), the IP looks up as an imgur.com domain via the Fastly ISP.

Yep, I re-checked here and it looks like an Imgur ip address.

@snbk97, given that Imgur is an image and video sharing community, are there any kinds of custom images being used in your Opera installation itself? If not, are there any imaging/video programs on your system that might be invoking downloads from Imgur through Opera? If 'no' again, you might want to consider doing some careful malware scans of your system.

In fact I guess it could be anything in Fastly, including something related to Opera.

@snbk97, why do you think it's Opera downloading? If it's indeed something related to imgur and you don't have any tabs with their content open, then maybe you have some extension that may be related?

First time I ran into so many answers looking up an IPV4 address. nslookup at command prompt gives nothing. But the college here blocks some stuff so I pasted into google and got the pet fence company. I tried another search engine and got references to imgur. Using an online reverse ip lookup I get no domain. It seems to change with the breeze.

Pretty weird unless it is a dynamic IP address in the first place.

Edit: Did nslookup of imgur.com and got 151.101.56.193 back.

I agree. The main question, though, remains why an Opera installation would be accessing it repeatedly... particularly if it were a dynamic IP. It's hard to imagine a legitimate hard-coded IP linking to a dynamic address number.

How does one know the Ip address of the site?
More importantly, how do I check if opera is downloading anything in the background? Through the download bar on the upper right?

You can just search for it or can use a nslookup command or even do a traceroute or ping ones.

There are programs for that. Or you can just observe your connection activity.

Thanks a lot for the info! I have checked it out and it seemed beyond my knowledge. I will try to use similar programs such as TCP view.

You seem forgetting something.

Qihoo reported AkerBeltz recently among other things.
If you don't keep your protection tight, one of those viruses might use your workstation as a node or part of their network.
Just saying, it is possible.

Signed in just to confirm this still happens.

Continued full throttle load lasting several minutes. Ready to discontinue using Opera (or at least Opera Developer) for the first time in a while since I started in 2004, and excluding the brief moment between 12.x and re-implementing features to Chromium.
