New build - Opera developer 41.0.2340.0, the change log, and the announcement
"After a break without a developer release last week, today we are delivering to you for testing few new features.
Faster startup
Starting the browser should be very fast. However, until now, if you had many tabs open last session, the browser would start loading all of them at the same time. This could mean slowing down the browser. With Opera 41 we’re working on optimizing browser startup time with the most recent active tab and pinned tabs being prioritized for startup, while background tabs will be loaded with decreased priority. We are working on benchmarks results, to be shared soon. Meanwhile, let us know whether you can feel the snappy startup!
Battery saving improvements
When using battery saving mode, Opera now detects, which video codec can be hardware accelerated, and tries to choose that codec when doing video conferencing via WebRTC (this includes services such as Google Hangouts). This should save a lot of CPU and battery for our laptop-using video-conferencing hobnobbers out there! And even if Opera can’t find a hardware-accelerated codec, it’ll now also try to limit the pixel count when in battery saving mode to reduce CPU usage if possible.
The test has been made on a MacBook Air 6,2 (Intel Core i7 1.7GHz) running OS X 10.11, running one side of a video conference on AppRTC from full battery (100%), until the battery has been fully drained.
Hardware acceleration for Video Pop-out
Video popup so far has been handled by the software, which translated into extensive CPU usage. On low end devices that could lead into general system slowdown.
Now we are introducing hardware acceleration support for Video Pop-out. This should greatly limit the need for CPU support, and free your PC resources to other things, while you watch your favorites movies.
Sync enhancements
We are rolling out some security enhancements, and we will share more details in the future. For now be advised that if you use passphrase, you will be able sync only between latest desktop clients (Opera Desktop 41).
Popular searches
We have added experimental support to popular searches below the search box in Speed Dial. The idea is to have one-click access to trending searches. So far the backend is manually fed, so while we’re working on it, you might find more of what we think is trending, than what the rest of the world is searching for.
Personal news updates
There are multiple changes in personal news, here are the most visible ones:
– Onboarding redesigned, and aligned with catalog.
– Added history navigation, now you can go back to previous view.
– Due to limited interest, News on SD removed.
– More web feed related fixes, including image loading.
– Search got even more powerful: No need to include http:// prefix when entering site’s name.
– More feeds found during discovery process.
To discover more, take personal news for a test drive, or check the change log.
Known issues:
– Auto-update for Windows USB standalone installations does not work. To update these, please download, and install the package manually.
– We are not releasing Windows 64-bit builds.
– It is not possible to enable VPN with a clean profile. It is being tracked as DNA-56872, and we are working on a reliable solution.
– With #media-detachable-view-hwaccelerated enabled, closing the pop-out, and selecting a new movie makes the pop-out open again.
– Speed dial extensions are not added on Windows."
The Chromium has been updated to version 54.0.2832.2.

No, no, no! Remove the spam. Including “New iPhone” as a suggested search is indeed an insult. I search for what I want and need to search for, not what others search for. I’m not a sheep. :(|)

Hi @joakimwallden, you can disable it in (advanced) Settings > Browser > Start page > Show popular searches

Thanks l33t4opera. That is a relief, but such a stupid feature should definitely be opt-in rather than opt-out, if it has to be included.

joakimwallden, as you sure already know - stupid features [able to bring any money in] are always opt-out

What has happened to VPN? I installed Opera Developer 41.0.2340.0 yesterday, and it does not include any VPN feature. Why was it removed? Was it removed? I don't get it. I'm not normally a Developer user, but I installed it because the free VPN feature was available. It worked well for me. I had uninstalled Developer because of some buggy behavior, but I reinstalled it yesterday because I am having to use a lot of public Wi-Fi lately and really need the VPN. Can someone tell me why it's gone and when it will return?

I'm sorry. My issue above may have been caused by a bad installation. I uninstalled, then reinstalled, and now the VPN is back and working fine. Sorry for the waste of forum space!

New update - Opera developer 41.0.2349.0 - this time together with the 64-bit version for Windows
The change log, and the announcement.
"Today we are releasing the weekly developer update. We are wrapping up O41 dev cycle, focusing on quality for newly developed features. You can expect beta 41 release next or following week.
Personal news
This week we concentrated mostly on stuff that’s under the hood. That means bug fixes and improvements, mostly in the areas of web feeds handling. However there’s one visible change for users – little newspaper icon would appear in the address field if web feeds are detected.
Click on a feed, and it opens in personal news where you can use option to subscribe. Please note, that this is early stage of that feature, so it’s not polished. In case you’d like to keep your address field clean, you can turn it off in settings (Browser | User interface | Show available news feeds). We’re eager to hear your feedback.
Opera Portable installer
It’s a new version of the Opera Network Installer, with the user interface better suited for portable installations.
The portable installer provides the stand-alone version, selected by default (no need to dive into the Options section), detects portable drives automatically, and suggests installation to these devices by default.
The installer is available for download here. Please try it out, and let us know in the comments if it works as expected!
Windows x64 build
Finally! After a longer break, we are able to deliver the 64-bit version of the Windows build. We really hope it meets your expectations, because we are planning to release this version in 41 Stable!
Known issue: auto-update for Windows 64-bit does not work at the moment – we are trying to fix it as soon as possible. For now, please download the manual installer, if you are eager to get the newer x64 build earlier."
