Okay, after much experimentation, it seems like I have a strong suspect now among my extensions. Now I've only disabled this Flash Video Downloader: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/flash-video-downloader/aiimdkdngfcipjohbjenkahhlhccpdbc?hl=en-US

And since that, notifications started to get through. I don't know how I've missed it earlier, but this seems to be the culprit. I just leave this here as future reference, I guess I'm not the only one using this extension in Opera...

I was having password problems today, one particular password, current Opera version, and the Synchronisation tool fixed it. It's under Settings > Basic. It's useful for keeping stuff matched between different machines, and one reason I keep using Opera despite the problems there can be with video codecs.

I know this is an old thread, but it keeps popping up on search engines. This answer works in August 2018, v55.0 under Linux.
Is there any way to bring back system title bar and borders?

I have the problem solved. Made a clean install of Ubuntu 18.04 and installed the latest Opera. Everything worked fine untill I installed 'Zoomba', an extension I used before because it lets you adjust the zoomlevel of the scroll-wheel. So it's more then likely that 'Zoomba' is not compatible with the latest Opera versions anymore .

I installed snap version to get rid of constant video codecs headache but it caused more problems than it solved. On top of opening applications problem now the problem of loss of saved passwords appeared. So I deleted the snap version and went back to regular opera.

It would be a bit more helpful if you posted what opera outputs when it is launched from the terminal.

Btw, ubuntu 18.04 has kernel 4.15 by default and it will probably stay with that one until its eol in 2023, so you'd better not install kernels from third party repos if you prefer stability over features.

From the way I understand it, the libffmpeg.so file that Opera uses doesn't contain the proper codecs for certain videos. This is how I fixed it for KDE Neon (Ubuntu variant). Make sure you have the Chromium browser because this will break Opera in the process and you will need the Chromium libffmpeg.so file. Use this at your own risk.

sudo updatebd (update locate database if you never used it before)

sudo locate libffmpeg.so (shows location of all libffmpeg.so files)

sudo rm /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/libffmpeg.so (removes the libffmpeg.so that Opera is using, if your results are different from the locate command then use that path)

sudo cp /usr/lib/chromium-browser/libffmpeg.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/ (copy the Chromium libffmpeg.so into the Opera directory)
