Although it's pretty much rampant this days for some companies to sell users data, and even though i do not completely trust Opera; i do not think the argument made sense because they (Opera)made the VPN absolutely free so that you'd be moved to download or use there Browser - which is where they'll make profit. So if the VPN is a standalone app, then i may go with your thoughts.

@jeffss that might be an issue from the website/blog you visited but here's a tip... Clear your Opera Browser cache, uninstall and install it again; hopefully it should be fine this time.

Just like @shelluser has said, the pinned tabs will be closed if you do not save browsing sessions, for it to be saved you need to tell opera to do that. I think his reply is the perfect answer, if that doesn't help i'll be happy to assist further.

Okay, this should work
Go to Settings.
Scroll to Apps and Select Opera Mini.
Now Clear All data (This will clear the browsing cookies and cache).After that logon to Facebook and it should prompt you to save or remember password for next time, Click on Save password for next time, problem solved.
