I agree -- it is hard to find where to click to close the current tab -- I often end up using the keyboard accelerator (Ctrl-Q or Ctrl-W -- I forget offhand). It's not very user-friendly in that regard.

Better, would be an option to move the 'close-X' icon to a fixed location, like at the far right of the tab-bar like firefox or palemoon have. You can the close-X icon to the far right so it always allows you to close the current tab by clicking it. Often which tab is active is hard to see -- especially if you have multiple tabs open.

This should really be considered an "accessibility" option.

Someone had problems updating Opera. Two people gave suggestions (including me). One suggested using sudo on the cmd line -- which you said wasn't windows, yet I mentioned 2 ways to do do that. But one can do that via alternates. 1) sudo via the GUI someone pointed at a "wsudo", and I mentioned the equivalent "run as Administrator". and 2) a simple "runas" in cmd that does the same thing, but now can't find my post as base was labeled duplicate.

It is the case that there might be more than one solution, and barring off-topic or Spam, you might consider leaving posts rather than using what some might consider, heavy-handed moderating options.

Similarly, deleting user postings can be off-putting or "aggressive" to the user(ex. @Lamsoonia )on the recieving end.

I'm trying to add opera.exe to my firewall to allow it to go through, but there is no fixed name, "path/opera.exe" to add. My Quick launch menu has a shortcut to launcher.exe, but that launches another binary in a non-fixed-name directory. I need to know what path I can enter to allow it through my firewall. It doesn't work to have a version number in the path name as that changes, and the new version ends up being blocked.

It is not what it is launched as, but what it is running as at runtime.

This used to always bug me on Firefox until someone wrote an extension that allows you to recover any text you enter on a website before it threw everything you entered away -- for many reasons -- you hit refresh, you had to go back to previous page to check something, but going forward re-initialized page, Connection dropped, browser froze...etc.

TBH, I don't see how I'd convert a FF extension to one that worked on opera.

But this extension has consistently saved me hours of work. There seem to be so many ways for you to lose your input -- and this allows you to recover it. I'd recommend it only on personal computers.

I'm not sure what changed, this used to work -- downloading a file and opening it rather than saving it. What is happening now is that I have a dialog to save the file -- and then I have to open the directory (usually c:\tmp) and click on the file to get it to "open" under windows. Used to be I could just click on the download link, and the file would be auto -opened in windows. Is there some place where I have to change to have the file's "open" action called automatically upon downloading it? I.e. it used to be auto-downloaded into tmp and the windows "open" action would be called on the file. Since about 1-2 months ago opera isn't calling the windows open action.

How to fix?

If I click on a ".jpg" or a ".wav" file, opera doesn't ask me where to save it -- it just displays the picture or puts up a tiny - player. Opera clearly opens some files, I would gather this is configurable "somewhere". It's this config section I'm looking for (does that make it more clear?).

Like google phone service allows one to click on a "phone" link -- it talks about registering google voice as a handler for phone type links. For me, I want to have Opera download files of type ".torrent", then turn them over to the local program to handle such file types. Similarly apps such as Aria, can process a download link that tries multiple protocols for download -- if your distro supports it, it will try both http and torrent protocols to download a multi-gig download. Normally browsers have had the ability to launch special handlers for different file types -- looking not just at extensions, but usually the files mime type. Opera used to have the ability to adapt to new media and allow adding actions. Firefox, IE, Edge all have this -- pretty sure chrome does as well -- which should mean opera does unless it has been crippled.

There should be some way to set actions for various file types. I don't see why devs would cripple opera where the feature is in other browsers. Was there a discussion viewable in the forum about why this feature was removed?

If you close out feedback about the opera forums posted in the forums because it isn't the right location, it seems unuseful, if not negligent to not post a link to the right location. I see no place for suggestions or feedback regarding forums for Opera. Instead I see a help topic under which I see forums, so to get help on the forums, I clicked on that and end up right back here.

If the forums are the place to discuss opera suggestions and features, it seems that feedback about how such suggestions are posted and handled would also be in opera's forums. Suggestions and new features for Opera doesn't say it is limited to the browser. Please consider that Opera is the name of company / organization developing Opera and feedback about the Opera suggestion and feature process would seem to be very relevant to the user's experience of opera.

I came here to make a suggestion for a strongly needed feature for Opera, but find the entire process to be more than a little "off-putting" and unfriendly. Is this how Opera has been implemented -- to be user unfriendly? If so, then my suggestion in the area of improving Opera's user friendliness (I am not being specific because I'm not sure that this forum is very friendly to new suggestions and features) may be out of place. Even the process of reporting a serious lacking in Opera's user friendliness is very difficult.

First, I have difficulty in finding a place to give feedback about opera.
Then I have problems logging in because the password requirements have changed and my old password no longer works. I go for the reset password option and get the email and am told to change it to something I'll remember better next time. I had no problem remembering -- I had it written down in a password manager. The problem was (I'm guessing) the old password not meeing all of the new requirements. I don't know, because all I knew was my old password didn't work and didn't have an upper case letter in it.

I then try to change my password on auth.opera.com, using Opera, to something that meets the new rules, only to find that Opera won't let me change my password!

I type in a new password meeting the requirements, and I get little green checkmarks next to each password box, but when I press save, I get an error message restating the password requirements (12 chars, upper+lower case+number). It doesn't tell me what is wrong, just restates the requirement no matter what I type.

So I bring up another browswer (the one I first used to d/l opera), and entered the same password I'd entered in reset dialog in Opera only to have it work in a non-opera browser.

Then I again search for where to submit my suggestion / needed feature only to guess, that maybe I would raise the issue in the forums and at least find out where to submit the issue. There I find some confusion, as my feature relates to Opera on Windows and see a generic suggestions and new feature forum. I go to read a sample of both to find where it might be better for me to post only to find in the first post I looked at, a rather harsh treatment of a Opera-forum newbie (as, obviously, I am as well). Feeling empathetic, I tried to repost their suggestions in the suggestion forum only to have it closed off because I commented about how the previous writer's suggestions had been tossed on the floor by a moderator, who then tossed my post with their suggestions on the floor saying that the suggestions should have been given in the forum feedback location because I had reworded the original user's suggestions so they would more clearly be understood as suggestions or new features. NO, I AM NOT TROLLING -- this is happening exactly as I am writing it... I came to write a suggestion/needed feature and ran into everything else when I got here -- and I still haven't gotten to the suggestion -- as I ran into all these problems trying to submit the suggestion! Before I even can submit the suggestion, I'm exhausted by all the problems getting to submitting a suggestion, making me wonder how many people just give up before then actually suggest anything because of all the problems encountered in trying to make one. I see there are many people who either didn't have the problems, or persisted, but am amazed at all the problems I run into just trying to submit a suggestion and the lack of "niceness" or civility on the part of those who might receive the suggestions.

Anyway, I don't know if I'll get an answer to any of the problems I ran into in trying to make a suggestion / feature request, or even a location to repost the problems (as it seems there is no way for them to simply be forwarded or moved to the right "queue"), but I'l have to take a break before I consider posting a suggestion, because I'm exhausted getting to this point.

Try downloading the update and saving it locally, Then try installing it to verify that it does install (or doesn't) If it still seems to ignore the update,
maybe try rt-clicking on the update and try "Run as administrator", and see if that helps?
This is a GUI version similar to dmitriev81's suggestion to use Window's to use a Windows cmd window and run a version of 'sudo' (via some BASH-for or LINUX-for for Windows App, or a standalone version you've installed).

@lnekko -- I saw something similar to that a few years ago. Don't know the exact feature, but it had to do with a developer feature - option that highlighted some specific type of rendering.

Maybe try disabling any new extensions (or all new ones) as a test and see if it goes away?

Most apps, (msoffice apps, adobe) seem to be able to remember the last 'N' locations they saved things (N being configurable). But not opera, that I can tell.

If I am downloading files into a directory, when I goto download the next file, it forgets where I downloaded the last file, and always puts me at the default download directory. Even though I tell it to always ask me -- it always resets the default to the directory where things would go if I don't have it ask me. Very un-useful to download 100 files, and have to find the location where I want them downloaded each time. No, I don't want to have to reconfigure Opera for each website, I want Opera to remember what local directory I was using -- At least the last time I saved a file.

Ideally, it would remember where I was saving files the last time I saved files from "websiteX") and prompt me by starting at that local directory.

Storage is cheap -- it could keep track of the last 100 websites and the local directory that corresponded to them, and show me that last local directory as the default when I go to save a download from the same website.

How is completely disabling it different than removing it? I.e. how would it be functionally different?

@sandman192 Whether or not something starts "on boot" (or "on login") is a property of the OS, not the program. The program may try to "auto-insert" entries into OS areas to "auto-start" itself, but ultimately, the OS starts before the programs do, so the OS is the point where programs can be controlled (allowed to started or not) when the OS starts.

Have you gone into your OS settings, like running "msconfig" and looked to see where something might be allowing Opera to start or stop?

If your Win version hides how to run "msconfig", maybe googling for "how to run msconfig" will show you, but you should be able to disable 3rd party programs (like opera) using msconfig.
