Old problems

  • I have 2 problems. One is an out of memory error when restarting or closing tabs. The other is an Unable to load abc.* website, no reason given just a window with a google search page with the name of the website in it. The sites are local News outlets and Blog site (rarely down)and upon checking with other browser they are running. This problem happens on the Laptop and desktops too. And no turbo. No proxy sites loading and no local proxy either

System Asus k61ic Dual core Laptop 4 gigs Ram Win 7 Pro 1 gig video card Opera 28

Other machines also running win 7 pro. with 4 -8 gigs ram and dual and quad core CPU's and Nvidia gt620 2 gig video cards Samsung Ace 3 Android 4.2.2 with 8 Gigs Ram 32 gigs storage All synced.

This is a repost of a problem I have had since March but No-One even bothers to reply

  • This is just a reaction. I'm thinking what I might be inclined to consider if I had your problem, though I'm not an expert on memory issues. First, though, how many tabs do you have open when you get the out of memory message? Is it all the time? The more tabs you have open simultaneously, the more memory you can eat up. How many other programs do you have open when you operate Opera? Perhaps you have some memory intensive programs operating in the background while you use Opera. Try closing the other programs, and just using Opera? And work for a while with one, or only a few tabs? Does that make a difference? Also, check your computer(s) for malware and virus problems. Maybe you downloaded something for all of your computers that has given you a problem.

Now in connection with the out of memory message on opening tabs, there may be an issue of your extensions and plugins. You can, you know, activate in your Opera menu under More Tools, Developer Tools. Enable Developer Tools with a check. Take a look under Developer Tools, at the Task Manager. There you can get a sense of the memory that all of your extensions use.

Try starting the Opera browser after deactivating all of your extensions, and see if that makes a difference? If it does, then try enabling only a few -- the ones most essential -- and see if you're still okay. You can see the plugins you are using in Opera by typing in the address bar Opera://plugins. I'm not an expert on what is essential there, but it does seem like you can deactivate and reactivate, so you could experiment there too. If you don't know, you could post what you have, and ask whether they're essential?

Do you have another browser on your computer, like Chrome, that also uses tabs? Do you get the same error messages when you use tabs in Chrome? If not, maybe you should consider trying a clean reinstallation of Opera. (If you were to do that, I'd copy the Opera 28 profile to a flash drive, or elsewhere, as you don't want to lose your bookmarks, or possibly other things -- speed dial, etc. Here's something on the internet about a person with a Chrome browser, windows 7, 4 RAM, complaining about memory problem and suggestions, including the need to look at plugins. You might look at some of the responses, as Opera is a chromium browser, so they could be relevant/helpful for you in trouble shooting..

On the unable to load the website error message, it sounds like it's only for a couple of sites. You might want to post the sites, and others can see if they have a problem, or an idea on why someone else might.

  • OKay The Out of memory Error is random and I usually only have about 3 tabs open when this happens I can surf with upto 10 Tabs open tho' As to malware and Virii I am very careful and have scanned just to double check and no problems there that I can see. The Unable to open website is also a Random thing but it happens to the Biggest Newspaper site in NZ, or even Google it's self. Yet it will go to Google when the search is pressed Searching for Google to get an answer as to why Google page is not opening yeah frustrating to say the least and No error noted. I will have a look around and see if anyone is having these problems

  • Ok I deleted your old topic...

There's something wrong in your system I guess... Well, try this: go to the Control Panel, System, Advanced Proprieties, Performance. One of the buttons will lead you to the virtual memory settings. It should be enabled to at least onf of your HDDs. Set your virtual memory size to "Defined by system", apply and restart.

  • is it possible you have a memory hungry antivirus that likes to run a scheduled scan in the background without your knowledge?

  • Scans are usually scheduled by the user, aren't they?

  • Yes, but many virus scanners have 'real time protection.' They run scans of downloaded and run applications and monitor your system. They can block and even delete files without warning the user beforehand or asking them permission. Sometimes they block applications from running properly.

  • Scans are usually scheduled by the user, aren't they?

Many antivirus has a default scheduled scan abd not everyone cares to change it.

Also many also will perform the scan on a different time if they can't run the scheduled one.

  • I use Avast with it running in the background. I have the Pagefile set on a different drive and is system managed. (I will soon be adding a 'boost' stick.) 4 gig of Ram and 2 gig of video Ram. a Dual Core 2.66 intel CPU.

The fault is just random enough to be annoying. Having opera start where I left off does help but sometimes your concentration can be broken and messages can be lost before posting.

Seems to be behaving since I turned my system into a dual monitor system. Weird

running in background is ok. i don't recall avast doing a scheduled scan when i used it, but check you settings just in case. and avast has a hardened mode that can cause problems when turned on (by blocking certain processes/programs). i think it is off by default, but peek inside the settings to make sure. avast sometimes has a update checker that might run on a schedule and a net work scan (smart scan?) ... i'd make sure they're not scheduled to auto scan also.

avast sometimes has a large emergency update that runs, seems to be separate from their regular update service. check your avast logs to see if that update occurs when you have problems (unlikely, but worth a look).
