Possible online scam posing as Opera support

  • I clicked on a link which redirected and lead to this message:

Opera - Alert!WARNING: Your Windows has a serious virus! Browser: Opera 28.0.1750.51 OS: WindowsIf you are seeing this message, you need to call Support at 844-756-7239 (TOLL FREE) immediately.Technicians are awaiting your call for FREE DIAGNOSIS & PRIORITY assistance removing malicious viruses from your Windows computer.

I looked the number up and it leads to some place in Arkansas, but who owns it I can´t honestly say.

Is this common? Is it for real and I´m just being unnecessarily suspicious? Looks like a scam.

  • This appears to be a scam. 844 is not toll free.

    Do NOT call this number.

  • Not posing as Opera support at all anyway - they just read your OS and browser and included it in the message (that is, if you'd been using Firefox the message would have said that instead). Same as any of those fake antivirus (aka "scareware") ads.

  • No worries, I won't open it. I just needed to know for sure if this really was a scam. I'm new to Opera.

    Thanks for the replies!
