How to prevent "update" popup?

Today's unwelcome update has cost me about an hour in uninstall/reinstall-old, recovery, and lost tabs, so I'd like to have it never happen again. This is the second time "update?" has popped up right over the tabs button as I'm about to tap it, and I inadvertently tell opera to update.
How do I prevent the update prompt from randomly popping up?
Basically, how do I stop Opera from checking for updates? -

@Continue1 What update pop-up would be that?
You can disable automatic updates on Play Store.

@leocg updates are disabled in Play store.
This is where the browser pops up a message while in use, saying "an update is available! Do you want to install it?" with "cancel" or "update" as options, and the "update'button being right above the bottom of the browser, where the tabs button is.
