This proposal is for ask for the introduction of four levels of security and privacy settings:
- Maximum Security Mode (Strongest Protection)
Strict authentication: 10+ digit PIN or biometrics required.
App lock: Instantly locks on close or after 1–5 minutes.
Encrypted backups & syncing: All data encrypted and locked.
Crypto wallet security: Requires authentication for every access and transaction, with phishing protection.
VPN: Always-on with AES-256 encryption and a kill-switch (can be disabled).
Ad & Tracker Blocking: Maximum blocking, no whitelisting.
Downloads: Requires authentication and AI-based malware scanning.
Browser settings & UI: Locked unless verified.
Tor: Always enabled but can be turned off with a warning.
Alerts: Email and push notifications for security changes.
- Balanced Security Mode (Moderate Protection)
Moderate authentication: 6–8 digit PIN or biometrics.
App lock: After 10–30 minutes of inactivity.
Crypto wallet: PIN entry valid for a session.
VPN: Auto-connects on untrusted sites, kill-switch optional.
Ad & Tracker Blocking: Enabled, but whitelisting is allowed.
Downloads: Prompts authentication for sensitive files, basic malware scanning.
Browser settings & UI: Authentication required for critical settings.
Tor: Enabled by default but can be disabled.
Alerts: Security change notifications.
- Customized Security Mode (User-Controlled)
Flexible authentication: 4+ digit PIN (biometrics optional).
App lock: Customizable inactivity timer.
Crypto wallet: Small transactions can bypass PIN.
VPN: Manual control, auto-connects only for flagged sites (user warned before connecting).
Ad & Tracker Blocking: Standard blocking with user-controlled whitelisting.
Downloads: No authentication or scanning unless enabled.
Browser settings & UI: No restrictions except for high-risk actions.
Tor: Disabled by default but can be enabled.
Alerts: Customizable notifications.
- Off Mode (No Extra Security, Default Experience)
No authentication or app lock.
Crypto wallet: Basic fraud protection only.
VPN: Fully manual, no auto-connect or kill-switch.
Ad & Tracker Blocking: Disabled by default.
Downloads: No authentication, only basic scanning.
Browser settings & UI: No restrictions.
Tor: Disabled by default.
Alerts: Opera warns before disabling security.
Additional Considerations
Password Manager: Requires PIN/biometrics in Maximum Mode, session-based in Balanced Mode, optional in Customized Mode.
Search Engine Protection: Locked in Maximum & Balanced, freely changeable in Customized & Off.
Reader Mode: Always available except in Maximum Mode, where it requires site verification.
Media Controls & Video Pop-out: Protected in Maximum Mode to block recording sensitive content.
Auto-filling: Allowed in all modes.
Wallet Alerts: Opera will email users about suspicious activity.
Which Mode to Use?
Maximum: Prioritize security over everything.
Balanced: Need security + flexibility.
Customized: Prioritize customization over security.
Off: Prefer Opera’s current behavior with minimal restrictions.
Final Thoughts
This system enhances security without forcing it, giving users control over their browsing experience. Maximum Mode is ideal for privacy-focused users, while Balanced and Customized Modes offer trade-offs between security and usability. Off Mode ensures Opera remains usable as it is today.
