They've ruined the bookmarks

To be fair, though, Vivaldi's browser is a technical-preview release. Kind of like Opera would have been if they had released a similarly-named version at a point prior to releasing v15. Only with time can one reasonably judge how the browsers truly compare, and how the developers for both organizations respond to requests for bug-fixes, changes, and improvements.
In the meantime, nevertheless, this remains an Opera forum. Just sayin'

Yes, I only mentioned it as there are a number of Opera fans of O5 thru O12... and the ex-founder is heading in the direction (some of us) wished Opera had gone.I especially appreciated how he worded the presentation, "A Browser for our Friends".
As you can see, I don't come here to berate or complain about Opera, nor do I bother participating in the Blog any longer.
So all those Opera defenders about how coding is so hard, and just be patient - and how we only had to wait 18 months+ for any semblance of Bookmarks? Yeah I don't think so.
Although that is a little bit snarky. It comes from a place of sadness, disappointment and frustration at what all of us have lost. The community was gutted, all the Opera 12 (and prior) s Skins are gone. User feedback during this transition has mostly been ignored, unless it aligned with the "new Opera vision".
I recall one user posted (3-6 months prior to the switch to Blink), that Opera was going to switch to Webkit, and everyone thought he was a damned fool. Then the shock of O15, gutted just like the community was (months later). Many of us stuck around, believing that Opera would rise from the ashes. Only to be told time and time again, that few if any O12 features would ever make it back into the new browser. The demand for bookmarks in any way shape or form was rebuffed with "just use speeddial".
I switched to Firefox, some others went to Chrome, and some still primarily use O12.

I went to the trouble of recovering my password so I can add this comment. I just did the automatic update and went from version 12 to version xxx. I am so disappointed in what you have done with Opera. Its not about new features, its about abandoning what was done well in the past. The bookmarks and even the "notes" sections were extremely useful and unique. They were what set this browser apart.
Issue one: you have thrown out the baby with the bathwater or as they say in business you have abandoned your core strengths.
Issue two: your management of the upgrade is/was about as immature as what Google does. Google makes a major change
without any notice to customer/users. Its kind of elitist in that they tell us "like it or lump it".
That is what you did as well. One can argue that since Opera is free you can do what you want with it. However, I can also do what I want with it.
I may try to reload O 12 and use it as long as I can. Otherwise what I want with it.. is basically nothing at this
point. -

So you recovered you password to show us that you've done zero research yourself as to the reason why they did this? Welp, mission accomplished I guess? And they didn't give "zero warning". Opera 12 was wrapped up 2 years ago. WHat do you think all the Opera versions between 12 and 27 were about?

Explain me that, please:
what's the point of select some bookmarks if you can't do anything with this selection? For example: you can't open all the selected bookmarks in the same time or move all selected into another folder.
Lucky me Opera as improved bookmarks! -

Uhh, you can do things with the selection? If you select more than one bookmark, either using click and drag or the check box on the bookmark itself, you can drag them to a different folder, right click and create a new folder with the selected bookmarks in it or delete the selected bookmarks. But if you can't get Opera to do that you might be suffering from a PEBKAC Error.

These bookmarks don't like me at all. Completely unmanageable. Yes, I can do the stuff you tell me, but no more.
I'm so sad, Opera is unrecognisable. :'''( -

I had 6-7 (they did away with that space???) on top for easy one click access, bookmark cross on top right also for easy access. Now we have to go to Opera button and click this & that to do everything the hard way, and they are going to keep it like this?
Pathetic change for the worst. Absolutely pathetic.

Was pleased with how Opera 27 moved the bookmarks
The only problem is ... as somebody said in comments above that there is no way to "manage bookmarks" or move them to the top level where they are easier to use
Anybody know a way?

I have been through all the browsers. IE is an abomination, Firefox is getting to big and slow, and I use Chrome only because I keep my work diary in Calendar. Then I very recently discovered Opera and liked things well enough it is now my default browser at work. Liked it until I bookmarked some thing and tried to organize it so I can quickly fine what I marked. OUCH! I'm having a very hard time doing anything that is easy in all other browsers. So I am asking for help and am assuming it's just me but let's find out.
I want to create a new folder inside of My Folders called Phone Stuff. How do I do that?
After I have the new folder I want to move several bookmarks into it. Easiest would be drag and drop but I can't even move these marks into an existing folder. How do I do that?
Thanks ahead of time to anyone that can tell me how to do these 2 simple tasks. If it is not possible then I guess I'll have to say goodbye to Opera and go back to something that works. I'm already getting in trouble here at work because I am not being productive and earning my pay as I have to spend so much time trying to do something I need but can't get to work in Opera 28. I would like to stay with Opera as I like several things about it. But I need to store locations I need to come back to later and in such a manner that my weak brain can remember where it is easily and quickly. For me that means stuff in folders with names I use and in that the bookmarks that naturally fall under the folder name. At least my Imported Bookmarks from Firefox to Opera did not change at all so if I had previously had placed it in Firefox where I can easily find it I can find it again in Opera under Imports.
HELP!!

I want to create a new folder inside of My Folders called Phone Stuff. How do I do that?
Open your bookmarks manager (Ctrl+Shift+B) and get into the 'My folders' folder. Either click the new folder icon near the top of the page (its a folder with a + in it) or right click a blank area in the man window and click 'new folder'.
After I have the new folder I want to move several bookmarks into it.
When in the bookmarks manager you should be able to click and drag to select entries. You can also hover you mouse over each entry and click the check mark on them to select them.

There are so many things wrong with the new bookmark system.
If you are using them as icons, they take up loads of space, so you can't see many on screen. Even if showing them in list format, they are still too spaced out and you don't get many on screen. A more compact format would be far better, both in the bookmarks window and the folder list.Add a bookmarks extension manager like Chrookmarks for Chrome.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrookmarks-chrome-bookma/kcdheengilgkagjehknnnofigbmlnnfj
I use with it, the Opera extension, Add Bookmark. https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/add-bookmark/?display=en
They're a very good team. When you click on the Chrookmarks icon on the icon bar, you get a nice vertical display that doesn't take up too much space at all. It's very neat and orderly.. Chrookmarks organizes the folders for you alphabetically or chronologically. You don't have to do anything there, other than to choose the way you want it organized.
Remember though, to download a Chrome extension easily, you need the Opera extension, called Download Chrome Extension, https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/download-chrome-extension-9/?display=en
or Extension Source Viewer, https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/extension-source-viewer/
As for the Opera extension, Add Bookmarks, you get a star icon in the address bar on the right, and also, when you right click on a web page (that you want to make a bookmark for), a star icon can be selected. When you click on the star icon, it sets up your taking the bookmark, and easily storing it in the folder you want.
Now if if the cursor for your mouse happens to be on the upper right hand side of the browser, it's much easier to open your bookmarks this way (by clicking on the Chrookmarks icon). As for taking the bookmark, you get two ways to do it (from the star icon on the address bar, or right clicking on an empty space on the page you want to save to get the star icon). So it's often quicker to take the bookmark with Add Bookmark. The Opera bookmark system still works, so you can make use of it too.

Thank you Lem729. Your directions were very clear and these extensions fixed everything that I think is wrong with the new Opera. I am once again a happy user because with these extensions giving the user control I can get work done!
again thany you very much.

Neo Opera is silky smooth and pretty. Other than that it is useless to me because the native bookmarks are atrocious. I won't bother installing extensions etc. I keep trying it once and a while to see what progress is being made. Overall it's a joke.
The Vivaldi project is already vastly better in terms of layout. All people who liked Olde Opera bookmarks should try Vivaldi. It is in nascent form and far from finished but the company is active in development and engaged with users; they solicit feedback and suggestions.

Why trash Opera? If you're happy with another browser, why try to stir up trouble here and recruit Opera users for some other browser?

Vivaldi is still piece of crap and have no match for old Opera. Still no browsers have no match for old Opera (except speed of course and some website compatibility). Vivaldi is still some pre-alfa product without features and with ugly design. Even if I dont like new Opera I have to admit that Vivaldi is useless.

Why they just don't do what IE Firefox does put the bookmarks in the top right corner with drop down menu to see them what's so hard about that.
Or has opera made this possible now as I have not used opera for a while so don't know about the latest versions I stopped using opera because I couldn't access my bookmarks easily like I can in firefox. -

You can access bookmarks from the Opera menu. You can also enable a bookmarks toolbar if you like. There is also a sidebar for extensions in the development release. There are extensions that you can add to that which allow you to access bookmarks.

Or has opera made this possible now as I have not used opera for a while so don't know about the latest versions I stopped using opera because I couldn't access my bookmarks easily like I can in firefox. With a bookmarks manager extension like Chrookmarks for Chrome (link provided in my earlier post in this thread), you can access your bookmarks from the icon bar by clicking on the Chrookmarks icon on the "upper right side of Opera". If your cursor is on the right side, it makes accessing your bookmarks simple. You can always if your cursor is elsewhere, or any time you want, access your bookmarks through the native Opera setup also. What Chrookmarks gives you (or some other bookmarks manager extension) is an "option" to access your bookmarks easily when your cursor is on the right side of the browser. Now I have already mentioned how it does a lot better than the Opera bookmarks setup in my earlier post. My point here is that it is useful just for its ability to give easy access to your bookmarks when one's cursor is on the right side of browser without even considering its other advantages.
