used opera for a long time but I was wondering how they make money from the browser, since most of the things in the app are free, there are no ads so I was wondering if they sold data, and I also didn't trust the VPN much because I don't know where my data is going.

Like (almost) all other browsers, Opera gets its revenue mainly from searches and from promoted bookmarks/speed dials.
