I recently learned, that Opera is getting money from Yandex, a Russian search engine. Is that really true? Aria says so, too. How can this be reconciled with the fact that Russia is leading a war against Ukraine (and others).
I haven’t thought about it so far. But I’m deeply disappointed up to the to quit Opera for Edge or Vivaldi in spite of its many nice features. Does anyone know more about it?

@derhimmelssheriff Yandex, Google, and other search engines will pay for placement and referrals. Yandex is the default search engine if you are in Russia or Ukraine, though the latter makes no sense to me. In this country (the US), Google is rhe default.

@derhimmelssheriff Almost all browsers get money from search engines, it's their main source of revenue usually.

The fact that Russia is at war with another country doesn't mean that Opera or any other browser maker should start boycotting and ending contracts with Russian companies.

@leocg When Opera, as they generally claim, are a European company and they're following European law there may be some rules that they have to apply to. If they would therefore have to boycott Russian companies, isn't known to me.
For me it's more of a personal thing, though. I don't think they should, but as Opera is a subsidiary of a Chinese tech firm, I don't think the management does have a problem with it. It would certainly be a different thing, if it was still mainly in Norwegians or Western hands.

@leocg admittedly, people of ukraine don't pay well, so they have to go in the meat grinder

@anexlader if a company is in the hands of a billionaire from one authoritarian country, it will come to terms to receive income from a company in another authoritarian. That's probably the way business goes. And has ever gone.
