Hiding 'Ad-Blocker' Hotmail Message

Version: 95.0.4635.90

When signed into Hotmail, Ad-Blocking is enabled.

However, there is a message, on the right panel, stating 'It looks like you're using an ad blocker. To maximize the space in your inbox, sign up for Ad-Free Hotmail.'

Refreshing the page, signing out and signing back in, and closing and re-opening the browser do not have any effect.

Q: How do I remove/hide this message?

A:

For reference, Ad-Blocking is also enabled in Firefox but this message is not displayed.

Surely there are multiple Opera users here who use Hotmail.

As a result, if someone could duplicate my issue and post an update, that would be super.

There may not be that many users who are concerned with the issue of YouTube ads.

In any case, YouTube (Google) in recent months has been zeroing-in heavily against adblocking by all browsers. Their success has been fairly widespread, though at times mixed... the uBlock Origin extension has been able to keep updating their adblocking techniques to stay ahead of YouTube's blocking detection, and there are some iframe tricks out on the Internet that right now can successfully spoof YouTube's blocker detection (but with a few problematic side effects).

But with Google's near-limitless resources and direct involvement in chromium-based browsers, this is likely to be an ongoing war that will be tough for adblocking users to win for more than short bursts of time.

@sporty78 it is possible that hotmail are kinda trickin you here. I think that the default background that says ad blocker detected is just always there. it is normally hidden by the ad. if the ad is blocked by any means it shows the background with ad blocker detected . it hasnt actually detected anything. hope i explained what i mean clearly it is hard to write it out. also insulting members tryin to help you is counter productive so go easy brother.

@ceedee That's probably the case. In addition to blocking the ad, something is needed to collapse that area. A different adblocker like uBlock Origin or a User CSS extension with specific CSS to set that area to display: none should do the trick.

To be clear then, the message 'blocks' all ads from displaying but there is no way, within Opera settings, to 'block the blocked message' (so that the right panel is completely 'blank?)..

@sporty78 In my testing, using https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/user-javascript-and-css/nbhcbdghjpllgmfilhnhkllmkecfmpld to set:

div.GssDD {
    display: none !important;
}

for https://outlook.live.com/ does the trick of hiding that whole ad area.

You can try this User JS workaround to try and get that extension in Opera 95.

I ask the above questions because Firefox 'automatically' hides the entire ad area without having to install the newest update 'or' install an extension.

Opera, being based on Chromium, supports Chrome extensions. You can install them from https://addons.opera.com/ or https://chromewebstore.google.com/. However, Google recently switched to a new Chrome web store that Opera 95 doesn't support. You need Opera GX version 104.0.4944.60 or newer or regular Opera (Opera One) version 103.0.4922.0 or newer to download extensions from the new store with workarounds like the User JS workaround I mentioned.

Firefox's adblocker is probably just better.

Disabling Opera's built-in adblocking and tracking protection and installing uBlock Origin, should produce the same result as Firefox's adblocker, if not better. If it doesn't hide the whole ad area by default, you can right-click it and block it with uBlock Origin to hide it.

The User CSS extension I mention is only needed if you're using Opera's adblocker since Opera's adblocker doesn't actually hide the whole area.

If so (and as mentioned), FF 'clears' the ad area completely (and automatically) within its update and Opera should do the same (without having to perform an extra step by installing an extension).

Well, not the only way. You can do it this way without installing any extensions:

Create outlook.txt in Notepad with just the following in it:

outlook.live.com##div.GssDD

Then, goto the URL opera://settings/adBlockerLists in Opera, scroll to the bottom of the page, click "add" under the "Custom Lists" section and point it to outlook.txt.

Thanks for the time and effort involved in assisting me.

As feedback to the developers 'out there,' full ad-blocking components should be included with all Opera software updates (without the need to install separate extensions each and every time).

@sporty78 use ublock and make sure auto update is on because when im using youtube it kept blocking me from watching youtube until i turn on auto update for ublock and it started to work for me
