Cannot disable auto update to Opera 100 no matter what I do

I really like the Opera 99 user interface but recently my computer magically updated to Opera 100. I really dislike the opera 100 UI and want to stick with 99 but I can't seem to prevent the auto update.

I've added an home environment variable to my computer to disable the updating, however whenever I power off and on my computer (which I do every night), opera ends up being updated again.

Anyone have a solution? I don't know why this update is being shoved down my throat so hard when I don't want it, I'd rather switch to fire fox at this point since its not chromium based...

Leo, what about adding "--disable-update" to the run command in Windows?

@bbildman I believe that only works for the specific shortcut you use to launch Opera, which isn't attached to the shortcut in the taskbar.

What worked for me is #1: Adding the system environment variable "OPERA_AUTOUPDATE_DISABLED" to my User variables, and then

#2: going to the program directory for opera, opening the folder that matches the version of Opera I like, and then renaming "opera_autoupdate.exe", "opera_autoupdate.licenses", "opera_autoupdate.version".

For me, it was ....AppData\Local\Programs\Opera\99.0.4788.9_3

@yazan61 I added that "--disable-update" to ALL of my Opera shortcuts, including the one on the taskbar. So, no matter which shortcut launcher I use (I have 3 of them, one on my Home page of Windows, one in my Start menu, and one on my taskbar...those are the only way I ever launch Opera

Hi Leo, well...for me if I have booted my laptop, the first thing I do is boot Opera, so basically - personally - I would never run into the issue you pointed out. Even if I click on a bookmark or a file that uses Opera, O would have already been launched. Or if not, being that I am still using O 95 (and Windows 7), the worst thing that would happen is that I would incur that dreaded Red Menu button in the top let corner...which would go away the next time I launched Opera

See if blocking the update server works.
