Why not?
Dave, if you follow most of joshl's posts, you'll discover that much of what he says is merely to augment his post count. Go back over this one discussion as an example and note his posts. Most of them are relatively meaningless in light of the thread's topic of discussion. Therefore, I wouldn't take his response to your comment in a serious vein. Personally I agree with you... that if starring a post is the only way in which to receive notifications when people comment on a discussion in which I commented THEN this should be done automatically.

OR we do what this thread is about... ^^
but yeah, auto-starring might even be the better solution as you can get rid of some threads selectively if they start getting annoying
... an extension could do this... If this isn't going to happen soon I might be frustrated enough to write it...

Why not?
For one, I star interesting or worthy threads.
Or important.
It's not the same as to follow a certain conversation for a while.Leo said good. If starring would be a public feature, we could separate it from just following threads - in private so to speak. :sherlock:
Leushino, shut up - you're merely jealous!

If "starring" the thread is the only reliable way of getting notifications from it, it would be good if it became starred automatically if you posted in it.
If we have a way to disable this option, then no problems. Not everytime i reply in a thread means that i want to follow that thread.

You shouldn't have to remember to manually star it after you post in it for the first time.
You always have the option to subsequently turn it off again if you decide that you don't want the notifications any more. This could be a configuration in profile page.

Of course you can disable it, just clicking on the star again "un-stars" it!
joshl obviously uses the stars for the specific purpose for which they were presumably intended, but if you're following a thread because you're interested in it, the chances are that you would have also posted in it anyway!
All the other forums I use in fact automatically subscribe you to any thread that you post in, usually with a global setting in your profile to disable this behaviour if you don't want it. That is the ideal, but I'm not holding my breath for that here!

Why have the forum headings suddenly gone into what appears to be Russian BTW?!

Ah, sorry I misunderstood you!
The forum's back in English now, I must have accidentally clicked the language button under the "post" button!

I can suggest another thing. Instead.
Threads could get marked with a special little icon when they've been commented on by the user**
Then you'll clearly see where to pop in even if you've forgotten you'd been there** -

You mean like almost every other forum on the internet already has?
Yes, that would be a good idea!
