What's happened to the new font rendering?

When Opera updated itself about a week ago, I was impressed by the new smooth and sharp fonts.
Today the fonts don't look as sharp and smooth, but look identical to Google Chrome's rendering i.e. not as good. What's happened?
I see this problem on sites like Facebook, Wikipedia etc, with standard sized fonts used on webpages with plenty to read.
Has Opera "turned off" the newer font rendering by itself?

I noticed the same. Check out my thread. In my case the solution was what leocg posted.

I disabled DirectWrite and it made no different at all; I've since re-enabled it.

Sorry "difference" not "different". You can't edit posts.
EDIT Actually you can - I just spotted the "wheel". Wish they just used an "Edit" button lol.

You can edit but only for the following 30 minutes. Then the post is unmodifiable.
How is the font rendering compared to IE11 or Firefox? In my case, with DirectWrite it looks like IE11; and without it, like Firefox or Opera 24.

I've noticed that on a few sites the font rendering is better and it's noticeable when you're the right distance from the screen. YouTube for instance looks the same in Chrome as it does in Opera.
