Opera 25 Questions

  • hi there!

First of all, let me point out how very excited i am to see opera for linux move to beta. Now i have three questions:

    1. how long does it usually (approximately) take for the beta version to migrate to a stable branch?
    2. when it reaches stable, will there be also rpm versions for opensuse available?
    3. if i install 12, the current linux stable, will i just get an update to 25 through the same update channel?

    Thank you.

  • RPM ... last I heard they wanted to let distros take care of the packaging. Opera Software will probably only host the same *.deb files they have now, what opensuse does is up to them. (Yeah, I know ... I also use an RPM-based distro so I'd prefer that format.)

Seems like beta --> stable has been about a month on Windows, in this case I won't make any guarantees though. If they don't think it's ready it may get bumped up again.

Obviously updates depend on your distro.

The cycle normally takes around 6 weeks, but Linux might be delayed to the next cycle if it's not yet ready to be stable.

    1. when it reaches stable, will there be also rpm versions for opensuse available?

If an rpm version appears, it will go through the normal testing: it will appear in Opera Developer first, then go to beta, then go to stable. It will not suddenly pop up in stable without testing in the experimental streams.

    1. if i install 12, the current linux stable, will i just get an update to 25 through the same update channel?

Maybe (if / when it reaches stable).

  • How can I test Opera if there is only a .deb version ?
I'm on openSUSE so, no luck here.

    Wouldn't be better to have a tar.gz package ?
