Yeah it's happening, it's being reset. But please (to the topic opener) don't spread false claims around saying Opera is forcing Google.
Opera screwed up this time. It shouldn't have given the opportunity of this to happen, now *tards will be all over the web spreading FUD that Opera is part of the new Google "Skynet" plan "Blink".

AFAIK, users already complained at the time 12.15 was a RC. So, Opera devs should know already about this.
Nevertheless, let's hope they will fix the fix.

Holy hell, I can't believe it. I don't want to use Google and Google products. For this reason, I'm using Opera. But it's really disturbing. Moreover, it's a final release. That's incredible. I hope you'll fix it.

rafaelluik, as the topic opener it was not my intention to make false claims. At that time 12.15 had been out less than 24 hours, there was no comment on these forums about the issue but it had been mentioned on the dslreports forums. I had not noticed the earlier discussions on the developer blog for RC2. The first impression was that Opera was trying to get people to use Google, as after all they do get lots of revenue via that route. Now that others have investigated, both here and on dslreports, it does seem that it is just a buggy implementation of a security change. Hopefully they will address it in due course, but the comments on the developer blog imply it may not be fast. Sorry if you misinterpreted my original post, it was never my intention to mislead.

In my case it only effects the search bar on the speeddial page. It disrupts my work flow enormously.

I upgraded on both my implementations that had duckduckgo as the default search.

                No issues.

You won't have issues that way... DuckDuckGo is one of Opera's standard "listed" search engines that is 'shipped' with the 12.15 (and earlier) versions. The problem arises only if a user inserts a new and different search engine onto the listing (such as StartPage or anything else not already on the list) and the user then attempts to make that the default search engine. In that case, the default setting won't "stick"... the next time you start Opera, you'll find Google is the default engine.

Not spewing lies, just stating observations.

Opera gets paid for taking people to Google, it's just unfortunate that they're willing to override user preferences.

Actually, you're not stating observations. You're stating opinions and/or jumping to conclusions.

Observation: this default search-engine behavior did not exist prior to version 12.15.
Observation: the problem appeared in the 2nd release candidate of 12.15 as the direct result of Opera "fixing" the browser to prevent 3rd-party apps from hijacking a user's default search engine setting. That fix has also resulted in blocking a user's ability to set as default a browser that was not included in the as-shipped list of possible search engines in Opera, but which was later added by the user. It does not affect default-setting other non-Google search-engines in the as-shipped list within Opera (such as DuckDuckGo, etc) - many therefore consider this a bug, not a "Google" conspiracy.
Observation: this issue in 12.15 RC2 carried over unchanged into the final 12.15 released version.

You have asserted that Opera is "willing to override user preference", which implies this issue is intentional rather than being a simple bug in the security fix Opera's devs just made. Yet there is no evidence to support your assertion, just your jumping to a conclusion based on pre-existent ideas and bias.

Thanks for explaining the purpose of the update.

In terms of my conclusions, Opera is in love with Google. There is a reason why it defaults to Google. And it continues to override settings in the mobile App which is what I was referring to.

For me, this new "feature" is bad enough that I dropped back to the previous version (12.14).
Hope it's fixed in the next version...

Is there any way to edit the default search engine through editing some .ini or writing some script?

Sure - but if you edit the default it'll be overwritten when you upgrade.

What about editing the search.ini from Program Files? Technically you could teach Opera the default search engine is another with this method.

                                  Go to C:\Program Files\Opera\defaults or region or locale(?)\(<your region>)\search.ini
Then you can manually edit there...

... and it'll be overwritten on upgrade, as stated.

I was talking about a solution to set a search engine as default and it survives on 12.15 restart, not 12.14 -> upgrade. But maybe it also may work for upgrades if you set the files as read-only?

You can try making StartPage the default search engine and learn us how to do it but only after you succeed.

Okay, that's enough. Now, I'm going back to 12.14.

I want to use StartPage and probably this is impossible with 12.15.

I don't know this is a big problem or not. For example, if you want to use Safari, you can only search with Google, Bing and Yahoo. This is even more strange. Opera gives us a choice. But unfortunately, this choice doesn't work with 12.15.
