They aren't. They are at war with malware that hijacks Opera's searches. Remember, it does the same thing with Yandex in Russia.
So stop spewing lies.

Not spewing lies, just stating observations.
Opera gets paid for taking people to Google, it's just unfortunate that they're willing to override user preferences.

Actually, you're not stating observations. You're stating opinions and/or jumping to conclusions.
Observation: this default search-engine behavior did not exist prior to version 12.15.
Observation: the problem appeared in the 2nd release candidate of 12.15 as the direct result of Opera "fixing" the browser to prevent 3rd-party apps from hijacking a user's default search engine setting. That fix has also resulted in blocking a user's ability to set as default a browser that was not included in the as-shipped list of possible search engines in Opera, but which was later added by the user. It does not affect default-setting other non-Google search-engines in the as-shipped list within Opera (such as DuckDuckGo, etc) - many therefore consider this a bug, not a "Google" conspiracy.
Observation: this issue in 12.15 RC2 carried over unchanged into the final 12.15 released version. You have asserted that Opera is "willing to override user preference", which implies this issue is intentional rather than being a simple bug in the security fix Opera's devs just made. Yet there is no evidence to support your assertion, just your jumping to a conclusion based on pre-existent ideas and bias.

Thanks for explaining the purpose of the update.
In terms of my conclusions, Opera is in love with Google. There is a reason why it defaults to Google. And it continues to override settings in the mobile App which is what I was referring to.

For me, this new "feature" is bad enough that I dropped back to the previous version (12.14).
Hope it's fixed in the next version... -

Is there any way to edit the default search engine through editing some .ini or writing some script?

What about editing the search.ini from Program Files? Technically you could teach Opera the default search engine is another with this method.
Go to C:\Program Files\Opera\defaults or region or locale(?)\(<your region>)\search.ini
Then you can manually edit there... -

I was talking about a solution to set a search engine as default and it survives on 12.15 restart, not 12.14 -> upgrade. But maybe it also may work for upgrades if you set the files as read-only?

You can try making StartPage the default search engine and learn us how to do it but only after you succeed.
Good luck  -

Okay, that's enough. Now, I'm going back to 12.14.
I want to use StartPage and probably this is impossible with 12.15.
I don't know this is a big problem or not. For example, if you want to use Safari, you can only search with Google, Bing and Yahoo. This is even more strange. Opera gives us a choice. But unfortunately, this choice doesn't work with 12.15.

My default search engine is blekko, and it stays default. But I made custom Google search, and deleted the one installed with Opera. Every time I start Opera, deleted Google engine is back. And, my Speed dial engine is set to IMDB, but every time I start Opera, Google is set as Speed dial search.
I run Opera x64 on Win 7 x64 and 32-bit version on Vista, same happens on both (I tried with Opera link disabled). -

Even worse! I have deleted Google, chosen another default search engine, closed Opera, restarted... and Google is there again, as default search engine! Please, fix this, it's really annoying!

I've found a temporary solution for myself. I just removed the search field from the address bar. I set the "s" as a keyword for "startpage search" and now I search directly from the address bar with "s" in front of the keywords (as in the old times ) It's very annoying though! The same as Opera on Android where you can't change the default search engine on anything else than google.

I use F2 to bring up the address field then type s before search word. I totally agree with you that it is still very annoying.

I've gone back to 12.14 for now, as it was starting to get on my nerves keep having to change my default back to Startpage.com and delete the stupid and unwanted google search every time i started Opera. Grrrrr!!!. :irked:
