@burnout426 It found something, shall I copy it there? It says the source is from Windows Error Reporting, some fault bucket, it shows attached files from AppData and ProgramData. And it finds multiple things with same things shown, but files in AppData\Local\Temp has different .tmp filename (and it's a folder called like that). The errors are very same, but the Opera version is different. The temp files doesn't exist. Tried to go to that folder but the last folder I can go from the path is \Temp, because the RDR5849.tmp folder doesn't exist. Maybe because I cleaned things recently from my PC and it cleans temporary files too. Okay, I just copy the content of that log there:
Fault bucket 1641447264806674071, type 5 Event Name: RADAR_PRE_LEAK_64 Response: Not available Cab Id: 0 Problem signature: P1: opera.exe P2: 75.0.3969.93 P3: 10.0.19042.2.0.0 P4: P5: P6: P7: P8: P9: P10: Attached files: \\?\C:\Users\Mateusz\AppData\Local\Temp\RDR5849.tmp\empty.txt \\?\C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\Temp\WER584A.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml \\?\C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\Temp\WER585B.tmp.xml These files may be available here: Analysis symbol: Rechecking for solution: 0 Report Id: 65c00c43-cae5-4212-82ba-65c9153fa34b Report Status: 268435456 Hashed bucket: c55469168935a0fd26c7979730569e97 Cab Guid: 0
I hope this will help in anything... Google says the RADAR_PRE_LEAK_64 is memory leak, but it doesn't make sense for the problem. Why would memory leak if happened would affect autoupdate, while Opera actually works pretty fine except that update issue.
This is the log of the newest event, though it shown more than one and all of them were similar, just different temp file and Opera version. But it seems it's one per version I used. Since 73 I only updated Opera when new version came. Before that, I had few 72 Operas etc. The last one is for 71. There is no more logs there.
Now for the launcher.exe... It seems it doesn't find anything.
opera_autoupdate.exe shows APPCRASH as an event name.

About uninstalling Operas. As I told before, this is the one thing I won't do. Just because I did that once and my speeddial or tabs (don't recall) was cleared. I fear this bug can occur twice. And with so many tabs I should check out, i can't risk losing them. Unless there is a way to save them as a file and then back up from that files. But I must be sure that I can get speeddials, tabs and search engines, because those are things I don't want to lose. Especially that search engines are not available in sync either and I use like 50 or more search engines for many many stuff. And I really use them regularly. Like Google translate from my language to dozen of other languages and from those languages back to my and this is already many search engines.
Pinging the autoupdate.geo.opera.com didn't show any errrors. 0% loss and it was done quickly with low ping. I really would clean install Operas once again. But You see, I once lost my data because it didn't get my things from the sync for some reason. This is the only reason I won't uninstall and clean all the files from Opera. I would do that already if that wasn't the case. And since I bought new PC I had to do that anyway, but I had my Opera data on old PC if anything went wrong. But right now if I clean everything and sync won't work... I would lose so many things. I should really clean thsoe tabs some day. I wanted to make a local site with links to those tabs. Thought it's not something I would do in a days. More likely months. Cleaning, chosing the tabs I want to have, making the local html file with good looking style and the code that works... With thousands of tabs, it's really painful.

fault bucket
I have some of those for opera.exe. Let's assume those are not the problem.

Exception code: 0xc0000005
For that error for opera_autoupdate.exe, I'm looking through https://www.google.com/search?q=Exception+code%3A+0xc0000005 to see if anything sounds like it'd help.

Here's something you can test (based on some suggestions in those Google search results).
Start -> settings -> update & security -> Windows Security -> Device Security -> App & browser control
Under "Exploit protection settings", goto "program settings" and choose to add a program to customize. Choose to add by name. Add one for
opera.exe
and one foropera_autoupdate.exe
. In the settings for each, override system settings and disable all of the features that are on by default, and apply the settings. When done, restart your PC and see if that makes a difference. If not, you can remove those exceptions.
After that, under "App & browser control" again, goto "Reputation-based protection" and disable things in there as a test. Then, restart your computer and try again to test if that helps. You can revert to the defaults after you're done testing.
Also, under "Virus & threat protection" in Windows Security, goto "manage settings" for "virus and threat protection settings" and disable everything there as a test. I think you did some of the testing there, but give all of it a shot. If that doesn't work, revert to default of course. Then, add the Opera install folder, the Opera profile folder, the Opera cache folder, the "C:\windows\temp" folder, and your "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\temp" folder the the exclusion paths and test updating/checking in Opera again.
It's doubtful that any of that will help unless some of those things are per-user settings where you have something not set to default.

@burnout426 I've done those App & browser control things. Though, by exception You mean in firewall? or where exactly.
About that code... it seems like something related to crashing. But I don't know. Executable files crashes because of memory access violation. Though I don't know how to fix if there is such problem.
There is one thing I want to try, though. I just disabled all addons. Now I'm going to restart browser to check if anything happens. Though I think I don't have anything except Tampermonkey on Dev and Beta, because I don't need extensions there.

By "exceptions", I was referring to the
opera.exe" and
opera_autoupdate.exe``` program overrides you can add to the "Exploit protection settings". Nothing to do with the firewall. -

Yeah, that code is for memory access violations I guess. Not sure if that's even the issue though with updating though. Just a shot in the dark really.

@burnout426 By just going to
opera://bookmarks/
when I hit Export button, it will save all speed dials and tabs on bookmark bar to one file, right? I don't have manually select which bookmark things I want to make backup of? Just want to be sure, better safe than sorry. Also is there a way to make backup of search engines? As I don't want to make like 75 search engines from the scratch all the time (this is how much I currently have, and I really use them all, pretty much regularly). I can see the search engines are mentioned in the reddit post, but I don't really understand which step saves them. And this is crucial for me. Speed dial, bookmarks and search engines. Saves passwords too, but they are less important. I can always just log in again.
Also, extension setting are stored in Profile in Extensions folder? Or Extensions State? Would be nice if I didn't need to restore the setting from backup files too.
I really don't need the rest. It will fill up later. I mean... I can do full restore, but isn't it making the whole process futile? If there is something off with the installation or profile, restoring it will cause it to happen again, right?

Yes, it will save all your bookmarks in every folder that you see on
opera://bookmarks
to one file. As in, it will save your "bookmarks bar" folder, your "other bookmarks" folder, your "Speed dial" folder, and all bookmarks and folders that are in them. It will save the structure too so they're still all sorted into their folders when saved to the file.Bookmarks are stored in the "Bookmarks" file in the profile folder. Thumbnails for speed dial bookmarks are stored in the "Bookmarks Extras" file in the profile folder. They are backed up and restored when you back up and restore the profile. Exporting them to an HTML file is just an extra backup that's in a form that you can import via Opera's UI.
Also is there a way to make backup of search engines?
There's no support for exporting and importing search engines. They're stored in the "Web data" file in the profile folder. So, they're backed up and restored when you back up and restore the profile.

Well... I had the very same problem here as op described in his first post.
My case.
No way to install Opera 76.0.4017.123, but I found two workarounds.Situation:
Fresh and clean install of Win7 64bit + updates + ASUS motherboard drivers. Nothing more than these.
No way to install Opera, either using standalone installer or downloadable version. Actually download version starts downloading installer files and than get stucked at some point (I guess at the beginning of installation process).Solutions I tested in order of appearance
- Switched to Windows 7 Safe Mode, installation went without any problems. I restored Windows 7 from image file in order to further investigate
- Disabling Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, restart, than installation went without any issues using download version of Opera. I did not further investigate which one has caused installation issue, Firewall or Defender.
After going back to normal mode (Windows 7 Firewall and Defender enabled) the update button is grayed out as described by op in his first post...
So this is actually request to Opera development team to check what's going on, even though the Win7 is not supported (?) any longer.
I hope my post will help someone. -

I just want to say, that the issue hasn't been resolved, even after I clean installed everything. Even with registry cleaner and everything. I removed profile and cache, installed everything from scratch and nothing. I even not changed default installation path, so maybe it will work. But nope.
The reason why I never replied after that is just because I'm very sick and tired of trying to do ridiculous things that won't work over and over again. This issue isn't from my side by any means. Opera is the only program that can't auto update for me. Not even third party software that checks newest version has seen Opera in "there is new version, let's install it". It keeps installing Java or Firefox from time to time, but Opera is never on the list of updates in that program. And the thing that it's been on two, maybe three different devices is just a proof that it has nothing to do with my settings. Because even clean install doesn't work. On my current PC, the Opera never has been working in the update thing. Even though I clean installed it when I first got my PC.
I really want just a solution that will work. Why do I have to stress out and try annoying things, just to make browser works as intended? It should be working right after installing. And I can understand that it can just not work sometimes. But it doesn't work for whole year on this PC and before that it didn't work on previous PC either. Even after clean installing few times and checking stuff. I don't really have time to spend hours, days, months to keep fixing a browser, that just doesn't work for no reason.
And yeah, I am rather annoyed by that fact. When I was trying to fix Opera month ago for 2 weeks, nothing helped. I have other things to do with my life than trying to fix browser for that long.

I can sympathize with you regarding updates.
For several years I have tried to get Opera to update automatically which usually fails. I have tried updating manually which wors in about 3 times out of 10. In the past when I have mentioned this the moderator doesn't seem very concerned.
We all know Opera is built on Chromium components , its a pity they cannot use the update methods of other Chromium browsers.
I have had 100% success in updating Microsoft Edge and with Vivaldi. In yet in the past I have been told the problem is not with Opera .....
I did all I could to get opera to update but in the end I just gave up, not worth the stress and hassle when other browsers are OK.
I would return to Opera instantly if they fixed the updater !

@mike88 Yeah, I considered stopping using Opera too. It has some cool features, but Chrome has some similar things and maybe not all are there, but e.g. addons are better and native (because Opera often has to use it thanks to "Install Chrome Extensions" addon). Also people were asking for tab groups, which are very useful, yet we were told it's not needed. I'm not really convinced by that reasoning. Because Opera has workspaces. Btw, Firefox had them too (like 5 years ago or earlier?) but for some reason they removed that feature. Because it was maybe not really useful. But tab groups is what many people want.
I really consider not using Opera as primary browser because of that. Chrome has many features Opera does and often works better. And since I have already Chrome and 20 other browsers installed, it's not really hard for me to swap them.
I wish Opera had more user-friendly approach. Instead "we do what we want to do and if people ask for feature, we will deny because Opera has better feature". And I'm not going to lose my nerve and time to try to fix problem that is definitely on Opera's side. it's impossible that two different computers magically doesn't want to update, even when one of them was brand new. And I think my old laptop, which now has dead screen, so I can't check it, had similar problem too. So, come on. What can I do if anything logical doesn't help. And every other program I ever used have autoupdates working well. Every browser. Just not an Opera...
There is a feature I would miss, though, which is My Flow. But I can always use Discord for that. It's useful but not irreplaceable. And since some sites doesn't work for me on Opera (like Quora), but works in any other browser... I don't really know why's that, but I don't want to wait till it resolves itself. Chrome works in more cases than Opera. And Opera doesn't want to fix the very basic feature, which is updating the browser.
I'm waiting till Opera starts to care for people. When they fix the updater and adds the tab groups... I will be more glad to use it.

I have the same issue, BTW, I'm using Opera GX and I don't remember the times opera://about/ or opera://update/ worked for me
The other day I was annoyed by this issue again (that Checking for updates⦠never produces any results), I was on opera://update/ page and noticed Something doesn't work? Let us know here. message. I was happy that Opera upgraded their Bug Reporting service, but upset that after reporting this issue the QA just closed it without any message
Currently to update the browser I'm running OperaGXSetup.exe, which automatically downloads latest version, but it's annoying that I need to manually check if the new version is out. BTW, I subscribed to this thread to get some updates.
Somebody said here that we need to make sure that opera_autoupdate.exe is present in our used version folder, well here's what running this application tells me:[26824:27312:0924/183827.640:26564421:ERROR:autoupdate_checker.cc(321)] Invalid params.
[26824:27312:0924/183827.640:26564421:ERROR:autoupdate_checker.cc(134)] Unable to prepare update checker runtime.Anyone understands these errors?
