How to set standard programme for e-mail handling?

I can't believe I'm asking this, it seems I should have known this several years ago.
How do you set the standard programme for handling e-mail links? Like you press a e-mail address in Opera and it opens in Opera mail, or whatever. I have set up an account there. I'm using Opera 12.17 for Windows 7.
Right now what happens is that an IE (11) window opens after 5-10 seconds with the message "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed."
Then IE proceeds to open about 50 tabs where it says "navigation cancelled", nearly crashing my computer.I realise this is probably not an Opera issue, but how does one set Opera to handle those "email links"?

I do not remember if I was ever asked that the first time.
I've checked Advanced > Programmes, but there was nothing other than magnet there. Should there be a protocol for mail there as well?

Thanks, I've tried that. It doesn't work. Still opens a gazillion IE windows. When I go back into Programmes the mailto that I added has disappeared.

Reinstall 12.17 over the top of itself. In the installer, click "options" and make sure "install for" is set to "all users" and make sure "use Opera as default..." is set. Then, click "upgrade". That should repair things. You might then have to go into "Default Programs" in windows or advanced -> programs in preferences to associate mailto.
