Data waste

I have Opera notifications & Usage reports turned off...
Yet still every time I open or close the app, it wastes my data,
sending stuff somewhere... Unless I switch connectivity off
before the browser.
It wouldn't be hard to clog the Opera data gathering servers by just everybody
Opening / Closing a few times at the top of the hour, or at a pre-arranged time.

Maybe Sync? New partner speed dials (though I know we generally hate those)? There are a number of reasonable things which might cause that.
