Tabs in Opera 23

I want to have the browser automatically move to a new tab when I open one. There used to be a tab configuration item on the Tools\Preferences menu. I just upgraded from 12.17 to 23 and am having fits trying to get it to work the way I'm used to.

Unfortunately you will almost certainly have to install extensions now to get that functionality back.
Opera 23 doesn't do anywhere near as much natively out of the box as 12.17 did.

Just press control left click OR Middle click on the tab and it will do it. It's quite simple to open a link in a new tab. From the search bar, alt. enter will open the search in a new tab.
Otherwise, there are extensions that do it.

@lem729 OP said to move to new tabs automatically when he/she opens them. It means foreground.
Alt+Enter in the address/search field is right, but for clicking links the appropriate shortcuts are Ctrl+Shift+click or Shift+middle-click in that case.

Yep, you're quire right, rafaelluik. Sorry. My shortcuts, control shift/or middle click on link would have made the new tab a background tab. To make it a foreground tab, you need, as rafaelluik says, ctrl+shift+left click OR shift+middle click. That will make the new tab foreground. It's just adding the "shift" to what I had.
If you prefer an easier way, Click to Tab is a Chrome extension you might well want to try, as it's supposed to open a link that you click on in a new tab, with an option to make it a background tab.

You can always uninstall it if you're unhappy with it.
To download a Chrome extension easily, you need the Opera extension, called Download Chrome Extension, https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/download-chrome-extension-9/?display=en
or Extension Source Viewer, https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/extension-source-viewer/
