Opera Mobile Classic did this - but very poorly. Any 5 digit number or longer was treated as a phone number ... and my tablet doesn't have phone capabilities!

No number set should be required as in opera:config for Opera Mobile 12. Now with DOM scan and HTML5 input any mark for copy-paste should be threatened as keywords, links, email or phone nr - see Mozilla. Of course phone capabilities shouldn't be detected on a tablet and phone nr start on 3 in case that anybody call 911. 🙂

Not sure I want to dial 911 because I saw it on a webpage, but 911 is not the only 3-digit phone number in this country. As far as I know, they do all end in "11". But then, on mobile phones you have all those phone numbers that begin with * that are not accessible on "landline" phones, and I don't know what the rules for those are.

Firefox says 'dial' with any combo, anyway it's with one step ahead in html5 dev.

That looks smart, the user can select the numbers text and Dial appear as one of the options in the pop-up?

With an add-on, yes. Can't be a standard feature because DOM scan is not safe.

Opera like Chrome depends on flags rather than add-ons. Off-road can compensate that and 'config:' command should be re-enabled (works in opera18).

@sgunhouse http://dylanreeve.com/phone.php says the rule as a test. '' or '#' or '#' can't be passed on phone dial screen.

The Opera desktop version can detect whether the string of text you highlighted is a URL or not and accordingly leave the option "Go to web address" enabled or disabled. Why can't the mobile version do that to identify numbers? It doesn't look like a security hole...
