I tried again to switch from my old FF to Opera. Newest version 36.0.2130.80. I am asked if the passwords should be saved, but they are not saved. I searched this forum, tried everything, nothing works. The password list from settings remains empty. I tried to import a lot of bookmarks and passwords from FF, no bookmarks, no passwords. If this error remains, I have to stay with FF, very sad. What can I do? Any help?

You said 36, so that means you are using Windows XP or Vista - for anything more recent it would be 60. It should still be able to save passwords though...

You are right, its still the wonderful Windows-XP... 🙂
But is it supposed to work with XP? Doesn't seem so.

Does it save bookmarks? If you were having problems with your profile, then you wouldn't be able to save passwords or bookmarks ... so if bookmarks are fine it isn't a profile issue.

Yes, it does save bookmarks. New bookmarks, the import von FF doesn't work, no error message, but no result. According to another hint, I gave full access to the profile directory - no change.

I tried to import bookmarks. First try - directly over the settings. Opera says ok, but nothing is there. Second try - export from FF to HTML-File, import with Opera addon. Addon says everything ok, xxx bookmarks imported, but nothing is there.

I think, Opera has severe problems. I will stay with FF. Thanks for your help.

You could close down Opera and delete the "Login Data" and "Login Data-journal" files in the Opera profile folder to see if it helps.

You could also goto the URL opera://flags in Opera and search for "autocomplete" to see if there's an option to override "autocomplete=off" on web pages to make sure Opera is offering to save passwords. Not sure if that option was in 36 though.

@hjk1 I don't remember. Maybe Opera 36 required that you have a password for your Windows user account set before it'd save passwords. So, try that if you don't have one set.

It might be some security software or Opera extensions interfering with Opera. Then again, maybe it requires some update that WinXP that isn't installed. Or, maybe one of the last XP updates broke something. Or, maybe it was just broken in Opera 36 on WinXP. where 36 works on newer OS's.

36 worked on XP SP3 at the time.. The last version listed on the FTP site is 36.0.2130.80 as you can see here: http://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera-winxpvista/

Saving of passwords specifically worked? (I don't remember)

At the time. That is, 9 August 2016.

I tried everything, every single hint in this forum. Nothing works.
Finally I deinstalled Opera, erased all files and directories of Opera
and installed completely new. The problems are still the same.
Opera 36.0.2130.80 does not work as it should.
I wanted to switch from Firefox to the much better Opera,
but without password saving, its useless for me.
Can anyone please close this thread, its not solved,
but useless to keep it open anymore.
                              Thanks for help to everyone.

Do you use a password to login into your OS?

No, I don't want to do this. I'm afraid to lock my pc. I don't trust MS.
My wife uses the same XP and the same Opera, no OS password.
                                      Her passwords are saved. Strange.

If her passwords are saved then most probably setting up an OS user and password won't make a difference.

@hjk1 You can create another user account on Windows for testing and set a password for it. That will also give you a fresh Opera profile to test with and it won't interfere with your current Opera and current user account. When you're done testing, you can delete the user account.
