After re-starting Win 7 and opening Opera to my home page, I go to the Win 7 task manager and find what appear to be multiple instances of Opera running.
      Why?
As I open more tabs, more entries appear in task manager and memory use continues to grow until, finally, everything- including pointer mpvement slows or stops.
If I close some of the taps I was using, there doesn't seem to be any decrease in memory. If I try to end any instance of Opera in task manager, Opera crashes.
      What is going on?

Post script: There are still unanswered questions regarding memory use in the forum, dating back to 2014. It doesn't give me a lot of confidence that I'm going to find answers here. I'm getting near the place where I un-install Opera and move on to something else.

As answered before, this is how Chromium works. If you open any Chromium based browser, you should see the same.

Use can Opera's task manager to see each of those processes and how much memory it's using.

This sounds like two separate problems.

First, every tab is separate process and opening additional tabs does increase memory usage, this is same in all chromium based browsers. For me, 20-40 tabs have no effect in system performance however.

Second, slowing or stopping everything during this process may not related to memory usage at all - such behavior is more like related to some conflict between Opera and Windows graphic drivers (or other hardware). I have read of such problems with video-heavy sites; sometimes windows graphic drivers upgrade has helped, sometimes disabling hardware acceleration has helped - but there seems no universal cure exists.

Why closing tabs doesn't improve situation - again no answer, but I would think that some component outside of Opera control doesn't release resources. Besides graphic subsystem problems - are you using some third-party antivirus suite? Sometimes they do not like Opera cache for example.
