:tools: Scheduled maintenance

Heads up! Downtime for the Forums, related to the NodeBB upgrade, is planned for Thursday, December 14, starting from 10:00 UTC.
Please make sure to finish all your posts before this time. The downtime should only last for a few minutes.

Opera won't start

  • After installing the latest update, Opera simply won't start. I click on the tray icon, the desktop icon, and the start menu, but nothing works. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Nothing. I even installed an earlier version. Still nothing.
    What's happening?

  • Check if there are opera.exe processes left from the last run. Terminate them from Task Manager and try launching Opera again.

  • Nope. No processes left open.

  • What'ts your OS and CPU? Latest Opera only supports XP SP3 and newer and CPUs with SSE2.

  • Windows 7, 32 bit. Intel i5, 2.6GHz.
I just ran the installation file again. No error messages. Same result - nothing happens when I click on any icon. I also tried starting the .exe file directly. I got an error message that says it can't execute the path or file, and that I may not have appropriate permissins to access the file. The thing is, it installed fine a few months ago and I had been using it until now.

  • Your profile may have been corrupted somehow.

Check the path to the profile folder at Menu > About Opera. Rename it (don't forget to close Opera before) and try starting Opera again to see if it works.

  • I would do that if I could, but remember, I can't start Opera.

  • Same problem here, I installed the latest update and cannot start Opera. No processes running, and I'd rather not obliterate my profile if I can help it.

  • @asplode

Do you mean you just installed Opera 21 from Opera 20? Save the profile first (copy it to be on the safe side), but if Opera 20 was working, go back to it. If you look at the root directory for Opera, there should still be an Opera 20 folder in it. If it is there, all you have to do, I believe, is delete the Opera 21 folder. Otherwise, uninstall Opera 21, reinstall Opera 20. You saved/copied the Opera 20 profile, so you can try substituting it in Opera 20 for the profile that is there.

  • I upgraded from : Opera 21.0.1432.57
    I upgraded to : Opera 21.0.1432.67

Opera 21.0.1432.57 worked fine before the upgrade.

  • Here's the debug log: Failed running Opera.exe
    [0516/082556:FATAL:launcher.cc(274)] Failed running Opera.exe
    [0516/082644:FATAL:launcher.cc(274)] Failed running Opera.exe
    [0516/082657:FATAL:launcher.cc(274)] Failed running Opera.exe

  • I am having allot of problems with pages loading, images loading and Youtube won't work correctly since the new update.

  • Also, my Roboform won't load any longer.

  • I am having allot of problems with pages loading, images loading and Youtube won't work correctly since the new update.

It's offtopic. Please search for a topic/discussion about page loading problems or open a new one if you can't find one appropriate to your questions.

The same for the roboform issue.

  • I would do that if I could, but remember, I can't start Opera.

Make a standalone installation and see if it works.

  • Here's the debug log: Failed running Opera.exe

Have you tried a reinstall? Also, if you delete the folder with the last build, does Opera works?

  • It looks like it could be a failed update.

Do a search (in windows) for the folder '21.0.1432.67' (there should be only one instance). In the search results, right click that folder (21.0.1432.67) and select 'Open containing folder'. A new window should open up which contains that folder (21.0.1432.67) and (hopefully) at least one other folder with a load of numbers for it's name (maybe 21.0.1432.57 ???). If there is, then you can safely delete the folder named '21.0.1432.67' and should be able to start Opera again.

One caveat though, Opera is set to auto update, with no direct user controls to disable this, so one of two things could happen if indeed Opera is able to start after you deleting the above folder. 1) the update goes well this time and things work as the should, or 2) things don't go well and you are back to where you started. But then you now know what to do if '2' does indeed happens to you again.

  • Okay.

I deleted my Opera Stable profile from AppData\Roaming.

I deleted my Opera Stable cache from AppData\Local.

I uninstalled Opera. I removed the current and past versions of Opera from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera". (I run Win7 x64.)

I reinstalled Opera. IT DOES THE SAME EXACT THING.

I give a vote of no-confidence for Opera version 21.0.1432.67. This is garbage.

  • I deleted everything and tried reinstalling version 20. Even though I ran this version for several weeks, now it's the same result - it won't start.
    Here's the debug file:
    [0516/132722:FATAL:launcher.cc(263)] Failed running Opera.exe

  • @im5049 Where is this debug file? I imagine you have to start the opera.exe (or launcher.exe) with a special argument to generate a debug file?
