I usually leave my computer on 24/7 and so I've had 2 opera windows open for more than 24 hours now. When I turned on my monitor I was still open to one of the opera windows and so clicked one of the tabs to switch. The title shown for the window in the taskbar switched but no change visually in the browser. I switch to my other browser window assuming that was just being slow loading or something and found it to be completely black. When I switched back to the first window it too was not completely black. Using ctrl+ tab or clicking along the top still changed tabs and youtube even still plays if you click where the player should be in that tab.

I opened a new window to make this post and it is working now, but the other opera window is still completely black.

Is this a common failing of Opera? How can I avoid it?

It's never happened to me, but I don't leave my computer on 24/7. Maybe there was some sort of memory problem. If you reboot, does the problem go away? If so, see if this happens again.

Do you have your computer set to hibernate or sleep, and did it do so during the interval between Opera last displaying correctly and the onset of the black screens? Also, are you using extensions with Opera (and if so, and if you can get the problem to repeat, try switching off the extensions to see if one of them is contributing to the problem)?

No hibernate no sleep. using addons like adblock, ghostery. If the problem repeats I don't think I'd like to continue using the browser without those addons.

Restarting works, same as closing down the browser and opening fresh but I'd like to keep those tabs open and not lose them all the time.

Here's something on black screens in Firefox (involving video with flash), and the need to disable hardware acceleration. Thought you should see that it happens, even in other browsers.

              https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/991923

I saw references in a search to black screens in Chrome too. And in an Audacity forum, a person, Steve, (fourth comment from the top) made a comment on black screens that you might find interesting. http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=61596

He indicated that "black Screen crashes usually indicate that there is a deeper problem with the system other than a single application." Possible issues that he noted were (1) a bad bit of RAM memory, (2) driver problem (3) flash problem, (4) limited availability of drive space, and (5) malware or a virus (though the least likely (still he suggested a virus scan)

You did mention YouTube in one of the Windows (in the one that was black?). Now I believe that is an Adobe Flash application, so it's possible (to this non-computer geek :)) that there's an Adobe Flash connection to the black screen problem.

One final thought: I did notice that one of your windows, you said, was working. I guess it's the way Opera is set up with Multiple processes going at the same time. The idea is if something crashes, the rest of Opera keeps working. For whatever it's worth, here's a thread on Multiple Processes for Opera. https://forums.opera.com/topic/2454/multiple-processes-for-opera-exe/12

If you set Opera to "Continue where I left off", those page aren't opened when Opera restarts?

I haven't seen this behavior happen again, although one of the windows had a different bug where the opaque backing along the top became entirely transparent and the minimize button wasn't working. This was kind of annoying when you were working in a second window and could see tabs from the other window so clearly they looked to be part of the window you were working with.

As for "Continue where I left off", since you need to close each window one at a time in order to restart Opera I lose all tabs except for the last window I closed.

I haven't seen any graphicsl issues outside of Opera so I doubt it's bad ram/a driver issue, I have enough disc space and a virus scan found no results.

Now I did just update flash, which I hadn't installed yet for Opera (If it requires it's own flavour) so the youtube videos I was using must have been using html5? Since that thread mentions older flash especially hopefully that does the trick.

Which version of Opera are you using? I guess I assumed Opera 20 but now I'm not sure. And what's your Operating system? Hope the main problem with the black window doesn't return. It could have been flash related. I guess we'll find out. On the ram issue, maybe keeping opening two Opera windows all the time affects how much of the ram you have is used up. Therefore, how much RAM does your computer come with?

If this is Opera 12, I believe I have had this problem a few times.

I typically have 3 Opera 12 windows open and LOTS of tabs open. On a few occasions 1 or 2 of the windows typically would exhibit this behavior - you switch focus to the window but you don't see it. I believed I solved it by closing several tabs in one of the accessible windows, after which everything worked fine. I've also occasionally had other display problems with Opera pop up when there were too many tabs open.

Same problem here. It happened out of sudden during my work. I closed last opened Opera window and quickly started opera again. The new window appeared but was completely black. It might be just a bug, so I closed the window (alt-F4), waited a while, started Opera again... It was still black, logged out and on to the workstation.. Restarted.. Reinstalled Opera.. Did Windows Update.. Nothing helped 😞

This might be caused by an AutoUpdate, so i downgraded to Opera 19.0.1326.56. Everything worked fine. Upgraded back to current version of Opera (23.0.1522.75) - black window. So I switched to current version of Opera Next (24.0.1558.34).

                        Everything works well for now...

You just need to press Ctrl+Shift+X (or Opera -> Exit).
This will close all windows and keep your session as is.

In Opera Classic this was called Sessions. Try saving your window layout as a session.

You just need to press Ctrl+Shift+X (or Opera -> Exit).

Wow thanks, christoph142, this is useful!!
