Why No Opera 20 Portable?
-

Not that I turned over every stone on the planet, but so far from what I saw at my usual sources, the OperaUSB site has Opera 12.16 ... and PortableApps.com has Opera 12.17.
Is there an Opera 20 Portable available somewhere ... somewhere legit and safe?
I found supposedly Opera 20.0.1387.51 Portable at ...
http://www.thinstallsoft.com/opera-next-portable/... but, for starters, I've never heard of that site. I don't know if it's legit and safe. And it's also the NEXT version of Opera. I'm not sure I want to use the NEXT version of Opera.

Change the folder of the installation in the installer.

You dont even need to install the Opera 20, just use 7zip or whatever you use for unzipping and unzip the Opera install file, there will be an opera.exe file in there that you can run without installing, It wont be truely portable though, it will still create registry entries and put stuff in the AppData folder.

But, that wouldn't just up and Abracadabra Bada Bing Bada Bang make it a Portable Opera.
That wouldn't make all the necessary adjustments to ensure that it is an actual Portable version of Opera. -

The thing to know with Opera 15+ is that saved passwords work only on one computer. Everything else should work.

I'm not saying it wouldn't work.
What I'm concerned about is that it be a TRUE Portable version.
It's as Colderwinters said ... doing it via this quick method would mean that it wasn't a truly genuinely Portable App and thus it would still create registry entries and put stuff who knows where all on the Hard Drive.BTW, Steve ... how do I set my Avatar image? I so far haven't seen where / how to do it over in the Profile area. I have a feeling it's hidden in plain site, but it's eluding me at this time.

Create an account on gravatar.com using the same e-mail address you use here.

I can confirm this. I have been running Opera Blink (and Opera Presto) on this particular machine for the past couple of months (a then fresh install of Win7) in 'Stand-alone USB' portable mode (via the official installer) and there are no files relating to either version of Opera stored in AppData. The only files related to both Opera's (other than the ones in their respective program folders), are the two desktop shortcuts I created, and some files in the windows /prefetch folder.
I only ever use Opera (all versions) in 'Stand-alone USB' portable mode (since the option has been available) in Windows or Linux even though it is my default browser (specifically 12.14). It's just the way I prefer to use it, oh and it's great for backups too.
I've not checked the registry for entries yet, as I am current in Linux at the moment.

Alright Sidneynet, Leocg, Linuxmint7 ... I finally did it. I installed Opera 20.0.1387.91 on my Flash Drive via that Stand-alone USB method. YES! Awesome!
I wasn't even aware that Stand-alone USB mode existed in the Installer.
Before embarking on this no longer Mission Impossible, I did a quick search to make sure I knew what the heck I was going to be doing. The steps looked simple and they were. Not that I have tried it yet at this instant, but at least it's already showing up perfectly there in the menu of my PortableApps.com menu. So, it LOOKs like it should work. I'll try it out later.
Thanks for cluing me into this tip / secret, guys!

Oh and thanks for the info on how to add an Avatar image, Leocg.
However, I'm probably NOT going to be doing that.
It's that ... :::Sigh::: I'm just sick and tired of having to create accounts for every friggin' thing we do on the Net. It's like, you want to blink? You have to create an account. You want to look to the left? You have to create an account. You want to look to the right? You have to create an account. If you feel a sneeze coming on ... you'd better hold it, lest you have to create an account. Sheesh! Grrrrrrrrr! LOL -

There's no editing capability on the comments on this forum, is there?
Upon reading my previous comment, I would have probably edited it a bit to make more sense. I think the 3rd paragraph didn't come out quite right. But, it's probably too late now. -

Yep, but it's limited to 30 minutes after you've posted it.

Oh Okay.
The thing is, the other day when I first figured that gear icon was where I'd find the editing button, I clicked on it and absolutely nothing happened. Right now I do see that it's active. It must have been a glitch at the time. Thanks again, Leocg.
I AM now in the middle of testing my Opera Portable.
It had me worried there in the beginning. I put my Bookmarks file in the only Opera-related folder that I saw there in my PortableApps.com area for the Apps. It was a folder named "20.0.1387.91." But, the Bookmarks didn't come up. I was, "Awww MAN! What NOW?" Then I quickly looked in that "About Opera" area and it said the Bookmarks would be / should be in the Profile folder. But, there was obviously no Profile folder in the "20.0.1387.91" folder. It turned out that the Profile folder was just roaming around independently outside of that "20.0.1387.91" folder. O --- Kay! Stuck the Bookmarks file in there and the Bookmarks now came up and work. -

You have to reload the page first, unfortunately. The new forum still has a few bugs ... even I as a moderator have to reload the page first.

Reload the page before being able to edit a comment?
Thanks for the heads up, Steve. -

As a workaround some App-Virtualizer like http://www.cameyo.com/ should do the trick (but as with all app virtualizer (thin apps, evalaze, etc.) such a thing is best done from within a VM (bare system without any fancy cancy stuff+updates which may interfere with the virtualization process, or better to say if there are some prerequisites for the 2be Virtualized App allready installed on the system those stuff won't be captured by the process (in the compare of the snapshots before and after the install) - besides that as cameyos motto is "software should be used, not installed"
