Why on earth Opera had to change my own default settings on its own - with all that new theme, new view, new shortcuts, new wallpaper, everything visible? I'm not interested in any of your new features, at least shoved into my face in that manner!

@whywhyonearth I feel your pain. Seems the software and the forum can at time be very Nazi like. But I guess because we get it free they feel they can. The thing we accept when we install is that it's their product, not ours, so they can do as they please . . . of course for what they feel the common good is, their common good that is. They are high tech geeks and we are down here in the trenches. Just about the time we get things comfortable we might as well accept they will change it. If it didn't change now and then there would not be a job for them. Changes justify their being there and getting paid, they always have to prove they've made it "better" now., and isn't the whole world that way in a big sense? Ya! And so it goes. Hang in there. Try to flow with it. I've been around the block a few times and this is the way I've seen things pretty much progress since 1987 and on the web since 1996. G'day! Jack ":-Dx

I haven't paid attention to how new Opera handles it, but in old Opera (Opera 12), there were 2 different states for each setting: default and user-modified.

When a setting wasn't in the preference file, that told Opera to use the default value for the setting (which was hard-coded) . Then, if a user modified the value for a setting (even if they changed the value back to match the default), the setting was present in the preference file to show that the user had messed with setting.

On upgrade to a newer version when Opera changed the default value for a setting, if you never messed with the setting, you'd get the new default. But, if you had previously messed with the setting, even if you reverted back to match the default value, your setting would be honored/kept on upgrade.

I think that worked out pretty good and Opera should do that now when possible if it doesn't. It of course won't help with wallpapers and themes if old ones are replaced instead of just adding new ones that are the default.

If you left Opera on default theme, that may change. If you have selected your own theme, it should stay as you selected - I know mine has.
