Max Items in Bookmarks Bar, Stash & Speeddial?

  • In Opera 20, what is the maximum amount of items I can put in the Bookmarks Bar, in the Stash and in the Speeddial?

Right now I have the Bookmarks Bar filled with 10 items. Can I put more? Will it become a rotating carousel like what AOL has? If so, how many items could go on it?

Does the Stash also have a maximum amount of items that can be stashed there? Or is it theoretically endless?

And the Speeddial? I take it that with the max of 9 columns ... around 45 items can be put there?
Or are there pages on the Speeddial?

  • I'm not sure there is a limit but I haven't explored that. But I have in my personal bookmarks bar right now, 20 folders each filled with many bookmarks, some with 10. So you have a helluva a lot of space. I only have 7 items in Stash. I'm not sure there's any limit, but I"m more concerned about the bulkiness of scrolling down. But listen, it sounds like you are just beginning with this. Do you know how to create a folder. If you right click on an empty space on the bar -- try it near the end of the bar -- you can create a folder. You can drag bookmarks into the folder. The folder can have a lot of items, and can be organized alphabetically. Just right click on the folder, and select "Sort Alphabetically."

Now you also can put favorite items in the Speed Dial. Now you say there's a max of 9 columns . . . around 45 items. It's way more than that because you can create folders in the Speed Dial by dragging with the mouse one item on top of another. Then you can name the folder by right clicking on it (and choose "edit title." Right now I have 20 folders. One of them has 10 items in it. Do the arithmatic. 20 times 10 =s 200 (if I had 10 items in each folder)(as it is, I don't), but I'm only using 1/2 of the speed dial space (and if I fill up the speed dial with thumbnails, it's possible you can scroll down and add more. I haven't tested that.. Now, a thought: you might want to go to menu/settings/browser, and under the title "Start Page" Do NOT put a check in "use big speed dial thumbnails." Then you will get smaller thumbnails, and have more room in the speed dial. So the good news suntana, is that you have tons of space in the Speed dial for storing things. I put the more important, most often used things in the Speed Dial (I have a radio folder, a TV/video folder, a general news folder, and other folders reflecting personal interests (with a lot in each folder). Opera is the only browser that lets the user create folders in the Speed Dial. You might want to experiment with that feature, and make sure you can do it.

Also, in addition to the Speed Dial, the Personal Bookmarks Bar, and the Stash, you can add an extension for a Bookmarks manager at some point, if you want more capacity or features. I use the Chrookmarks extension for bookmark managing, which I got in the Chrome store. (You can download extensions from the Chrome Store if you have the Opera extension, "Download Chrome Extension." For the moment, I would suggest just focusing on the Speed Dial, Bookmarks Bar, and Stash. But the extension possibility is also there down the road.

I don't think that there is a limit. Regarding Stash: http://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2013/11/opera-17-wins-macworld-editors-choice/#comment-1124575390

  • @leocg

Very interesting link with a reference to Opera winning some awards for Opera blink and Coast. And I learned something too.

One commenter said regarding Stash: "After 50 items are added a new stash page is created. There is an arrow on the left of the first page to allow you to click down through pages. However you can also just do a search on a keyword via the search box on the top left."

It appears you can have pages in Stash. And can do a search with the search box, though I assume they meant the one on the top right. It's the right anyway from the perspective of the person typing.

  • You can have alot more bookmarks on the bookmarks bar than what you can see there, the >> symbol on the end of the bookmarks bar shows the rest that dont fit

  • With Stash, there seem to be no practically meaningful limit, at least not that imposed by the underlying SQLite table: the id column is integer (maximum value 2*10^9) and the maximum size for the database is 32 TB.
As of right now, I've got 866 items in Stash, 255 MB stash.db, and I haven't ever felt any slowdown on Stash opening or search.

Wow. Are you using the Speed Dial, and Personal Bookmarks bar also? What motivates you to chose Stash over other places to put items? Are you using the Search Feature to find Stash items. I would think with Stash if you have a lot, it might be hard to retrieve stuff.

  • Excellent stash of information there, lem729. I'll definitely be experimenting with it tomorrow. It's getting late right now.

With your gold mine of info, it's possible that I might be able to pull this Bookmarks thing off with just the Bookmarks Bar, the Stash and the Speeddial without having to go the Bookmarks extension route. I really don't want to use extensions if I don't have to.

Right now I only installed a NOTES / Notepad extension. I never used extensions before and I sure hope I don't have to suddenly engage in an extensions fest.

Thanks a lot for the info, lem729!

  • Thanks for the info regarding the >> symbol at the end of the Bookmarks Bar, Coldwinters. I was hoping something like that would be the case. I already have the Bookmarks Bar filled with 10 Bookmarks. Now after that I'll probably just add Folders and organize the rest of my Bookmarks that way. Well, in conjunction with the Stash and the Speeddial as well of course.

I just have to think and determine / decide on the best and logical organization layout among those 3 storing areas.

  • You can fit at least a dozen folders on the Bookmarks Bar if you use short names. I have 11 folders + 3 bookmarklets, and plenty of free space on a 1920 x 1080 monitor.

    12 folders + 12 subfolder in each + 20 bookmarks in each subfolder = 2,880 bookmarks.

Yes, of course, I use both SD and bookmarks.

For me, SD is for "visually-organised," most frequently used links, which I can think of as cards lying on a table, remembering "where" each one is.

Bookmarks are for frequently used links that I want to use without opening a new tab (root level) or long lists of similar links, which don't have to be organised visually like SD. One example is a list of links to episode guide in Wikipedia for each TV series I watch.

Stash is a heap of all the read-later, or probably even read-never, rubbish. I squeeze items to single lines, without thumbnails, and read their headers only after I've filtered the list using search. With my number of items, Stash search is the only way to deal with it. I've seen requests for Opera to make grouping and sorting in Stash, but I don't think I'd ever make any sorting effort with my collection...

  • Thanks for that additional bit of information, Pesala. Even as I went to bed last night, I WAS wondering whether there was Sub-Folder capability. Now knowing that that does exist, that will definitely make things easier.

I definitely don't remotely have 2,880 bookmarks, but do have more than what would have been able to be handled without Folders & Sub-Folders.

As Hannibal used to say on the TV Show The A Team ... I love it when a plan comes together.

@lem729 Uhmm... did you? That was Mr.T's signature line on the show.

  • Caught me there. 🙂 Didn't remember it.

  • Hah Hah Hah! And the plan IS coming together along fine.

As of last night, I got through about one third to one half of the way through recreating my Bookmarks.
So far I just did it all via the Bookmarks Bar. I deleted what I had in the Stash and haven't decided yet whether I'll incorporate the Speeddial or to what degree.

It's that I have Dial Up and if I were to flood the Speeddial with Favorites, well, that would be that many more images to load ... or I guess at least the 1st time around until they get into the Browser Cache.

  • The speed dial sites quickly get in the cache, so the loading is only a big deal the first time, or the first time after you empty cash. The Speed Dial can be beautiful, and you can, if you chose, use it only for what you want to emphasize. You don't have to overload. Indeed, in my view the Speed Dial is like a house. Too much stuff in it, and it can make the whole browsing environment ugly. So far i have about twelve folders (with five to ten links in each) and maybe 8 more non-folder items. They take up only half a page. Nice wallpaper, and voilà, you have a wonderful environment . . .

Of course, still, it's all personal choice. Glad that you are making progress.
