Lost keyboard input to Opera 12

Out of the blue I cannot load anything from the keyboard into my Opera 12.x (except the delete key works!). In desperation I downloaded Opera 20 thinking it was the latest version so it would work, yes well it does in a way, but without a menu bar and bookmarks it's pretty awful, i.e. useless. I've reloaded 12 but still the same. Anyone know how to fix this problem??

You might try installing a fresh Opera 12 version into a different-named folder from that where it currently is installed, resulting in a second stand-alone Opera 12 installation. Simply re-installing Opera into its previous-named folder causes it to auto-import a number of intentionally left-behind Opera files, which unfortunately can cause corruption from those files to be imported as well. Putting Opera into a fresh folder causes those prior, left-behind files to be ignored by the new installation. That should give you a new, "clean" Opera 12 installation to check out. If that works OK, you can copy over your bookmarks, notes and eMail files (if any) to the corresponding new folder, since those particular files can't corrupt an Opera installation. Other Opera files and sessions data can (and sometimes do) import corruption into a new installation. (As always, copying files into Presto Opera versions should always be done with Opera turned off).

Usually this would be caused by a plugin in one of the tabs - and usually F9 (Focus Page) will still work to get focus away from the plugin. Or also Ctrl-Tab to cycle to a different tab, or Alt-Tab to switch to another application and then back. But I did say "usually" ...
