I have Opera 36.0.2130.80 installed, which the about page states is up to date. However, at least 20-35% of the websites visited now result in the following error message:

This site can’t provide a secure connection

      www.insertwebsitehere.com uses an unsupported protocol.
The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite. This is likely to be caused when the server needs RC4, which is no longer considered secure.

The number of sites this is a problem at seems to be growing. Replacing the https with http does not work, it simply forwards to the https and results in the error message above. Tweaking my proxy security settings has not helped either. What was once annoying is becoming increasingly inconvenient. I'm not really sure what to try next.

      Constructive suggestions would be appreciated.

We are at version 44.0.2510.1218, brother.

Mine also would not update but doing it manually will do it.

Opera 36 is the latest Opera version that supports XP and Vista but it's not the current version.

As it uses a very old version of Chromium, as time passes higher are the chances that sites stop working.

Can you provide example website which fails? There are number of reasons why you may get such message, for example site uses some outdated/unsupported ciphersuite or there is someone/something trying to actually intercept your connection.

I have that error visiting these sites. There are more but I can't find them right now. I was not having this issue a few weeks ago.

                  • https://fmovies.se/

I also get this when I visit https://www.humblebundle.com. I'm not sure if this relates to the same issue though. It also happens here.

@jhenen They are all fine for me, mate. Have you tried visiting them from another browser?

@jhenen - I can't open the screenshot you uploaded on tinypic unfortunately. According websites you linked they all use certificates signed by Comodo CA, so maybe you don't have Comodo certificate installed on your computer. You should have a button to certificate management in Opera Settings, so please check if Comodo is on the list. If not you need to install their certificate.

It can be also helpful if you provide screenshot of https://cc.dcsec.uni-hannover.de/

You should also expect to experience such problems more and more often. Windows XP is really old system and basically there is no security there.

I'm also using Opera 36 on Windows XP, and all those sites work except for https://9anime.to/ which is the only one that throws up the error message.
They all work fine in Opera 12.18!
                        🙂

                          Same here.

Most sites I choose to use via my Opera 36 do load here.
There's only one that shows the same as the OP stated: tvbox.ag (both secure and non-) only loads in my Firefox (I didn't try in my Chrome or Olde Opera though for I'm not using them for now) but does not in this Opera or in Midori (the latter's rather outdated though) (in Midori the 'message' is different, but who gives).

SSL Details. Humble Bundle Image. I just checked my certificates and I do have a Comodo certificate.

@jhenen, thanks for the screenshots! The problem with Humble Bundle looks indeed like related, probably your browser fails to download CSS files from Akamai CDN over HTTPS.

The list of supported ciphersuites on SSL details page looks very long, I guess that might be your antivirus. Please turn it off, restart the browser and check SSL details page. If it gets shorter, then it looks like your antivirus is doing something with your HTTPS connections. If that's the case please try to load failing webpages. If this solves the problem, please let us know which antivirus you use, we will check what the problem is exactly and how to solve it.

I assumed from what you said that switching off Net Nanny fixed the problem.
