My mom has the same problem with her Vodafone Web Box. Is there anyone out there who can actually help?

OK might have found a solution. On another device, downloaded the .apk from opera.com and emailed to my mother. Unfortunately, tried install but couldn't get cursor to go to the terms and conditions agree button Don't think that is an opera problem... tried 2 versions - most up to date one wouldn't parse, so asume android version is too old for it.

I guess you have Vodafone version of Opera Mini. If you see "end of service" message, then it looks like Vodafone shuts down their Opera Mini service and basically you cannot do anything about that.

they wont even send me another link i can try
m.opera.com of course, but is not a Vodafone service. Funny thing my old OM 7.6 run with MTU 1500 config now. Previously run MTU: 1240 as for OS TCP/IP info.

I won't send a link, because your phone does not support 3rd party applications as far as I can see. Opera Mini on your phone is supplied and operated by Vodafone. They can shut down this service the same way as a company can shut down a TV or radio. But I agree you should be notified about the closure with advance.
