Hotmail message occurred after setting a different tab to VPN. Not sure why Hotmail would be connecting home with a different IP address than what I logged in on.

      Microsoft account Unusual sign-in activity

We detected something unusual about a recent sign-in to the Microsoft account *******@hotmail.com. To help keep you safe, we required an extra security challenge.
      Sign-in details:
      Country/region: United States
      IP address: 204.52.135.174
      Date: 1/18/2017 8:49 PM (CST)
If this was you, then you can safely ignore this email."

Probably because it's detecting the VPN IP address. And since it's not in the range of the ones you usually are connecting from, it triggers the warning.

Remember that Opera's VPN doesn't work per tab.

Explain please. Each tab has its own VPN setting to on/off. Logically, it would seem the VPN is only for the tab it is set on. What surprise do you have for me?

Well, it's not. You turn VPN on/off for the browser.
