When I open my good old Opera 12.17, a window pops up asking me if I wish to update Opera. I do not; how can I make it cease asking?
TY!

It may be trying to update to the current Opera rather than just to 12.18.
I would switch the update check off (Tools>Preference Settings>Advanced>Security>Auto-update) and download and install 12.18 manually if you want the latest (last?) version of Presto Opera.

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought 12.17 was the last revision that was "true Opera", and that following revisions were Chrome-based and lacked much of what I liked about "true-Opera".
I couldn't find a setting for updating. I looked in preferences, but couldn't find an off-switch for update checking.
Where it be, eh?

TY davehawley- found it! I had the toolbar shut off because I thought it had everything that the drop-down menu
Was sad when Opera switched to being a Chrome-clone. Always thought Chrome was a dumbed-down browser for the masses.

Glad you found it!
A lot of people were sad when the old Opera was discontinued, we won't ever see its equal again I suspect, but they needed to use a readily available standard rendering engine as the old Presto one was becoming too difficult to maintain, and they chose Chromium/Blink.
Unfortunately it proved impossible to use that with the old interface, so they had to start again from scratch, and this meant dropping most of the old Opera facilities, as they were deemed to be little used by anyone except power users who are a very small minority.
Sad but true.
