My input: why not simply try it out? There will indeed be differences with Olde Opera, but that certainly is already the case if you're using Chrome a lot. One of the biggest things you'll miss will probably be those wonderful Olde Opera 'function' buttons - I had (and still have) over 45 of them. But the point is that it's normally not that big of a deal to simply install and try out a new browser, investing a little time to learn one's way around it and seeing how it 'stacks up' for one's usage patterns.

A couple of those things are complete show-stoppers for me, so I thought I would simply ask rather than spending quite some time trying to work out if some useful option was buried somewhere deep in the config.

I'd like to ask if I can import my bookmarks and keep them in the order I have them in ("my order")

I updated when, I think, Opera 23 was the current version and it was able to preserve my order back then.

Will it import sessions? Do you even get sessions?

Opera does not have sessions built in anymore. It has a 'continue where I left off' but it is not the same thing. I would save your session as a folder in your bookmarks before you make the switch. There are extensions that add a session feature, though. I personally use Session Buddy, which blows Opera's old session system out of the water.

I have icons to do assorted things... Can I have these in the current version?

No. Custom buttons was a little-used feature in the old version of Opera and they have decided not to bring it to the new one because the effort required outweighed the number of users that actually used it.

Can I re-open both closed Tabs and closed Windows easily?

          Yes.

          Does it still support Java?

NPAPI Java? Even Java doesn't support that anymore.

Thank you - most appreciated! While I'm at it what do you think of the latest version, pros/cons/comparisons?

The new Opera is my daily driver web browser. Both at home and at work. It is, in my opinion, the best web browser on the market today. That is not to say that it is perfect. There are annoyances but there seems to be less and less of them as the releases come out. The pool of extensions that work with it is also growing nicely.

Can it happily co-exits with Opera 12?

Oh and while I'm at it are there any rules for extensions, as a lot of the Chrome extensions seem to exist to pass on stuff to their author so they can monetise you? E.g. would the session extension mentioned be busy sending stuff to the outside World?

I don't know but they do have to have a warning when you download them if they are tracking your info.

They check extensions code before allow them into the add-ons page. And extensions should pass some criteria.

Again most handy, thanks - although the requirements for summaries including "It must be composed of grammatically correct and complete sentences" might give some programmers issues as they boldly go from programming into prose 😉
