Unable to use both Opera and Google Chrome browsers on Windows 8.1 simultaneously

I had been using Google's Chrome browser for a long time and also had Opera installed on my i3 (3rd Gen) based notebook with Win'8.1 64-bit. However, recently when I tried to use both Opera and Chrome, I noticed that both Opera became somewhat unstable and would freeze often. On reading up on the web about both browsers, I understand that both Opera and Chrome use the same JavaScript Engine (Carakan), so is that the reason why I am unable to use both these browsers simultaneously ? When I closed Chrome and used Opera alone, it worked very well.
Though Opera has some inherent drawbacks including compatibility issues with various websites, I want to use it on my notebook due to some new features it has (or will soon) introduce, like built-in adblocker, a battery-saving mode (only in dev version now).
Seek clarifications from veteran Opera users on my points above, and if there's a work-around to the issue. Thanks

Common javascript engine is not shared between programs and cannot affect stability this way. Most likely both Chrome and Opera are stressing some resource, what is not stable under load - somewhat buggy graphics drivers, faulty memory, HDD problems, CPU overheating, network overloading - this is quite hard to debug over current forum. Do you see any suspicious events in computer event logs?

Carakan was the name of the javascript engine of old Opera Presto. Javascript engine in Chromium is called V8.

Nope. Both Opera and Chrome are based on Chromium but they don't share files and their engines will run separately.
When I closed Chrome and used Opera alone, it worked very well.
It seems to be more of a system issue. Try checking both Opera's and Chrome's task managers to see if any process is using too much cpu and/or ram.
Try also disabling hardware acceleration in Opera.

@donq, Yes, I have checked the Event Logs which mention some warning messages but none related to any browser activity.
@leocg - Okay, I understand the part about JavaScript engines of Opera & Chrome. Haven't installed Opera on my Win'8.1 64-bit PC yet. Shall do so once the new version is released, which helps extend battery backup time. Will help me work longer without having to reach out for my laptop power adapter !
