Upgrade from Opera 12 to 30, Now runs very slow!

  • Have been forced to upgrade(?) from Opera 12 to Opera 30 (30.0.1835.88 in fact) as I started getting lots of 1066 errors, and 12 was using a huge amount of processor to do not very much! Now 30 seems very slow, and drops web pages out with seemingly random errors - last was "out of memory".

Are there any easy fixes? Or can I coax 12 back into life? Just noticed a thread about viruses, but have run boot check with latest AVG and found nothing?

I'm running windows XP Professional, SP3 on a Pentium R4 processor at 2.8Ghz with 750Mb RAM - Don't laugh too much, its served me well, and does all I want (not into video editing or games).

    Thanks

    Ian

  • Well, Opera 30 isn't the most recent version so you might try updating to the current one. That said, if you are experiencing problems in both Opera 12 and Opera 30, which are completely separate programs, it points to you having a larger issue somewhere with your system. There are many people still running Opera 12 without the kind of error you are experiences, which appears to be an SQL error.

Does it works better if you disable AVG?

As said, install Opera 33 first to see if the issue still happens.

Don't get me wrong, I'm typing this on a 2007 laptop for which I haven't managed to find a replacement since everything new seems to be a carbon copy of "design above functionality" Apple. You do need to add some more RAM. WinXP SP3 installation on your PC is probably swapping even before Windows finishes loading. Adding Chropera to that does not improve the situation.

Add some memory. Should be pretty cheap second hand.

  • Thanks for all your comments.

More puzzling still - after reading the posts above, I tried starting Opera 12 again, did not re-install, just used the installation 30 had (fortunately) left behind. Amazingly it all works just like it used to. AFTER it was working properly I ran Spybot and found 4 instances of Ilivid, which Avast had failed to get...

    What was all that about!

  • I have a Windows PC running Windows 7 Pro, 1.7 GHz quad core with 4 gigabytes of RAM. Why does opera use so much memory? Sometimes, even only one tab open, it will use over half my RAM, which bring my system to a crawl. I have to TM to stop Opera to regain functionality. Any way to reduce the amount of RAM Opera is using?

My version of Opera is 33.0.1990.115

It has become so bad, I considering changing browsers!

  • Either you have something wrong with your install of Opera or you have malware or something attached to it. Opera shouldn't use 2 GB of RAM with one tab open.

Opera has its own built in task manager that you can use to see which opera process is using what. Its in the Opera Menu > Developer > Task manager. You may have to enable developer tools to see it. Check it out and post what is sucking up all your RAM.
