How to disable "Recommended Sites" drop-down advertising in Search/URL Bar??

System: Windows 10 64-bit (WoW64)After performing a clean reinstall of my OS and Opera, I'm having an annoying problem with Opera's URL/Search Bar.
Whenever I click on the URL/Search Bar (ie. set focus on the Search Bar), Opera pops up a REALLY ANNOYING ADVERTISEMENT for "RECOMMENDED Sites" just below the URL/Search Bar. I'm assuming Opera is doing this to make money, but it's really obnoxious. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about....http://i.imgur.com/Oz6HAe6.jpgBooking.com? BuzzFeed.com?? Yahoo??? FACEBOOK???? These are websites I'd NEVER VISIT. EVER!
Can someone tell me how to disable this "Recommended sites" drop-down from popping up after clicking on the URL bar? I did NOT have this problem before I reinstalled Opera from scratch! I'm assuming it's a new "feature" the Devs added to ver 31 which I never encountered before since my previous install of Opera had been auto-upgraded numerous times... and I'm guessing Opera just carried forward my previous settings that didn't allow this new "Recommended sites" advertising.
Note... this website advertising problem i'm having ISN'T due to malware or some extension installed in Opera. This is a clean install and the only extensions I have installed are LastPass, AdBlockPlus, and Ghostery.

So no solutions to this unwanted advertising huh? Oh well. It was a nice 2 yr experiment using Opera but I guess this is goodbye. Will be uninstalling Opera and moving to the open source Chromium browser. Exact same rendering engine without any of the unwanted advertising "features" added by commercial entities like Opera or Google.

Weird, I have never seen such bar (and it doesn't pop up currently). I couldn't find any setting to configure it either. (Dev 33 version here.)

Yeah I thought it was really weird too! I previously had Opera ver 31 installed and did NOT have this problem either. But that was a 1.5-2 yr old install that had been auto updated TO ver 31 over the yrs. I was VERY HAPPY with Opera... but my Windows 8.1--> Windows 10 upgrade had some small glitches. Sleep/wake-up stopped working properly after OS upgrade so I decided to do a clean install which solved the problem. But after reinstalling Opera v31 direct from Opera.com, the browser now pops up this GOD AWEFUL, HUGE and OBNOXIOUS "recommended sites" advertisement!
I don't know why companies keep trying to force unwanted "features" like this on us??? I guess they have to make money somehow so Opera sells the URL drop-down to companies like "Booking.com", "Facebook" and "Yahoo" as Prime-time advertising space. Is it really worth it Opera?.... to piss off and LOSE YOUR LOYAL USERS just to make a freaking BUCK???
I left Google Chrome for the same reason... Google installed their obnoxious "Google App Launcher/Search bar" onto my Windows taskbar and there was no way to uninstall the program. No option in Chrome to disable the launcher. Sure u could "unpin" it from the Windows taskbar, but it would reappear if you ever launched a google app, like Sheets or Drive. I said screw it and moved to Opera... and now THIS happens. Oh well, I've now installed Chromium and Firefox and I'm even posting this reply in MS's new Edge browser. And you know what? Edge isn't so terrible. It's very lean & quicker than Opera, but it doesn't support plug-ins so for now it's a 100% no-go for me. But Chromium is GREAT and Firefox is surprisingly speedy now vs. when I gave up on it for Chrome yrs ago! Oh well... since there appears to be no solution... uninstalling now. Later Opera.

Interesting!!! So Opera Inc. has taken it upon itself to use unwitting customers as guinea pigs in some bizarre "A/B" product test experiment to determine user acceptance of new value added "features" (ie.. OBNOXIOUS PRODUCT PLACEMENT ADVERTISEMENTS directly in our URL drop-down) WTF Opera??? Have you ever heard of the term BETA TEST BUILD? Huh? Beta what? We have no freaking clue!
If you want to test user acceptance of new features, you DON'T FORCE EVERYDAY NORMAL USERS to participate in a beta test without CONSENT OR even KNOWLEDGE that you've enrolled them in an experiment! If you want to explore user acceptance of new feature then you do that in an OFFICIAL BETA where users EXPLICITELY OPT-IN by INTENTIONALLY downloading an official beta build themselves! But no. That's to F-ing logical huh? Instead, according to the thread linked by kotthecat...

Got it! On the main page (http://www.opera.com/) DO NOT click on "Download now" button, otherwise youll get the [31.0.1889.207], wich is not ok!
Instead, scroll down and click on "Opera for computers" and then click on the link "Prefer to install Opera later? Download the offline package." So essentially Opera Inc. has decided to toy with its users BASED UPON THE INSTALLER METHOD they choose from the HOME PAGE of opera.com. If you choose to install the browser using the standard online installer, which I'd guess 99% of Opera user do, then you randomly get picked for the "A/B product testing". But if you go through the extra step of downloading the offline installer, then you're guaranteed to get "normal", NON-ADVERTISEMENT LADEN Opera browser.
Well you know what Opera? You wanted to FORCE user feedback on this new "feature"? Well you got it. At a bare minimum you lost 2 loyal customers, mirandadealler from the referenced thread who WAS A 10 YEAR USER of your product, and ME, a 2 yr user. But I'm guessing you lost A LOT more than that. We're just the vocal minority, a VERY VERY VERY tiny minority, who went through the hassle to post on a message board seeking a solution. The vast majority don't speak up. They just leave.
Kotthecat, thank you for finally providing closure for me on this topic. Apparently official Opera employees don't give a flying f#$^ about their customers. This is 100% clear from their lack of monitoring of the forums and their OBVIOUS callus disregard of customer feelings by forcing unwitting users into beta testing JUST TO MAKE A BUCK OFF PAID ADVERTISING. As I previously said, I've already uninstalled Opera from my system. And now with Kotthecat's reply offering closure to a nagging question, I can stop monitoring this forum thread and move on. Address bar recommendations
This feature is now enabled by default. To enable or disable the feature, please go to Settings and in the “User interface” section, modify the “Show extra suggestions” check-box setting.
In the next iteration, we expect to deliver the option to show only the actual SD’s collection here. We will be happy to see more suggestions on this improvement.
