7 Pro 64 bit on all machines.
Any extensions being used? If so, have you checked with them disabled?
I have no extensions of any sort installed.

Yeah on the broken ones I get audio and the video player controls like pause and the progress bar but the actual video is just black.

Same for me. For some videos there's only sound and black screen, and some work completely fine. Win 7 ultimate x64, Opera 32.0.1948.69.

This is definitely a system codec issue and not an Opera one. Here is a link to the video file from the first post:

If you right-click, save it and play it with Windows Media Player, I bet it will play audio only. This is an issue with the Microsoft MPEG video decoder (the default Windows decoder for MP4) not being able to decode the video stream inside the MP4 container. It's common and not isolated to the 64-bit version of Windows. @pete8475, you should have something installed on your other machines, that you don't have on the problematic one - codec packs or media players that install codecs alongside them. Another possibility is that the Microsoft MPEG video decoder is a different version. It's located in the "SysWOW64" folder ("system32" for 32-bit), named "msmpeg2vdec.dll". Even if another decoder is installed, in this case ffdshow, it doesn't mean it's being used, because the Microsoft one has priority. It has to be either disabled manually (take ownership and rename) or via the so called "codec tweaker tools". They allow ffdshow to be selected as decoder for the different containers. -

So I'm on the problem laptop right now and that linked mp4 file plays just fine in WMP when I save it. Still shows a black screen in Opera btw.
I took a screenshot so you can see what I mean.
EDIT - I'm about to try that codec tweaker tools program to see if disabling the MS codec makes a difference.

So I took the approach of taking ownership of "msmpeg2vdec.dll" and renaming it to have .bak as the file extension in both system32 and syswow64 and I still just get a black screen on that video in Opera and it STILL plays in WMP12.
EDIT - I'm going to do a fresh install of Windows on this laptop tonight. After the install and windows update are done I'll put Opera back on. It'll be interesting to see what happens at that point. If it still doesn't work I'll try the Windows 10 upgrade on the weekend.

So I did a fresh install of 7 and this did NOT fix the issue. I've now done an upgrade to 10 and these busted videos finally work.

Glad to hear that and sorry if I caused you trouble. At least someone's problem is solved.

@luucasalves, not all sounds are in MP3 format. I asked specifically for it. Anyway, maybe I should have asked:
Is there a "GPU process" listed in Opera's task manager (Menu > Developer)? -
