      on Windows 7 / 32 bit

I already had Opera set as my default browser, it was working fine.

now, when Opera starts, I get the message "would you like to make Opera your default browser? Yes/No, don't ask again"
I click Yes, but I still get the message next time I open Opera

I go to Settings and attempt to manually set Opera as default browser, but clicking the button does nothing

why would this issue randomly appear? how can I fix this?

If you check the settings does it also tell you which browser is set as the current default?

You should check Windows configuration standardprograms and enable Opera as your standard browser.

How Opera was installed? For all users or it was a standalone install?

not 100% sure but I believe it was a standalone install.

Standalone installs can't be set as default browser.

If you go to Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default Programs, Opera is listed among the list of programs?

Control Panel > Default Browser exists but will not open when clicked. context menu Open/Open In New Window also not working.

possibly linked to the error I received?

Could be. It seems like Windows install is damaged.

it seems that way to me.

how to fix? should I be asking Microsoft?

                              should I be asking Microsoft?

That rather seems to be likely

I have the same problem as described herein:

"After using Firefox for many moons, I've switched to Opera (again), as it runs one heck of a lot better these days. I have set Opera as my default browser, and to always check that it's the default. But now, my Windows 10 default settings page pops up automatically whenever Opera loads! Even though Windows has Opera listed as the default browser. Opera's settings do not give me any way to stop that unnecessary settings page from loading."

So it's not resolvable, well it's not the end of the world (I don't think).
