Hello there!
I would like to try retrieve this thread 'cause I am possessing the same issue which is described here. When I want to play twitter/vine video there's just black screen with video controls (play/pause, volume) and I can hear the audio. There is NOT shown the error message "This browser does not support video play back."
Opera Version: 34.0.2036.47 Stable | OS: Windows Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit | opera:gpu https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11209787/opera-gpu-info.pdf | Graphics card: IntelHDGraphics4400 | Graphics Driver Version: 10.18.14.4280 (lastest available for my laptop; updated today) | More: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11209787/siu-report-0338-8459.htm
What I've already tried:
- enabling/disabling hardware acceleration (in Opera setting and also on opera:flags), restarting Opera;
- deleting cache;
- disabling extensions;
- reinstalling Opera;
- installing another codecs (ffdshow);
- installing the Codec Tweak Tool for setting up ffdshow as the primary codecs;
- unninstalling codecs and another applications which maybe have their own codecs.
But without any effect.
I do not have permissions to manipulate with files in Windows/WoW64 or system32 folders. The twitter/vine videos work fine in another browsers (FF, Chrome, IE).
Any suggestions please? I am stuck on this. Thanks.

@xnajja @spyk
In Opera beta, this is fixed (at least on my side it behaves fine)
when I disable HWA, twitter and FB videos/gifs plays fine...no black/blank videos, screens etc) -

I have the same issue as well, getting the "This browser does not support video playback." error on twitter videos. Posted on another thread before discovering this one so apologies for that. I'm using Opera 36 stable, on Windows Vista, videos run OK in Yandex browser and Flashpeak Slimjet, but not Opera. Tried disabling hardware acceleration didn't make any difference.

Thanks for that information mickysc, unfortunately for now I'm stuck on 36 for this pc as I am using Vista. But that maybe explains why I don't have the same problem with Opera on my Win 10 laptop.

Could that be the reason?
Yes, it can be related to the OS.
NO it is not, this is Windows XP updated with 3rd., Trouble is that when I installed it last week, no worries were offered by Opera, not even a warning on impossibilities or issues. No warning at all. so I am expecting an answer.

Issue here: I do not want to go back to Chrome, since opera works faster, but, if I have to sacrifice things for speed, I will have to think what is the convenience. I can't watch movies on Twitter.
This browser does not support video playback.So, MODERATOR, or someone, please help.

I recently asked about a similar problem here.
I'm afraid it's the same problem, Opera relies on the operating system to decode H.264 videos, which Windows XP cannot do, so H.264 videos will not play in Opera on XP, although they will in Chrome which provides its own support for the format.

Sorry to say but this is exactly the problem. As already said, Opera depends on the OS to play some commercial codecs like H264, used by Twitter videos, and, on Windows, only from Windows 7 there is native support for that codec.
Trouble is that when I installed it last week, no worries were offered by Opera, not even a warning on impossibilities or issues.
I don't think most softwares will do something like that.

After updating to Opera 45.0.2552.89 videos not playing again. Not all of them, youtube videos embedded into tweets still work. But those, which are encoded by mp4a.40.2,avc1.42001f, don't play. I've tried to download and play them manually. I.e. I've gone through extracting video urls from m3u8 files. And these videos are played ok on my pc, so it's not some 'missing codec issue'.
