I want to store my bookmarks in a folder that I back up regularly, not buried in endless subfolders. We spend a lot of time getting things right in this highly customizable browser and do not want to lose anything when things so south or the computer is stolen.

Now I think I used to be able to change the location in opera:config. But now, when I click Choose beside Hot List File Ver2 it expects me to open something. Huh? I want to move it. If I want to open it I can use Windows Explorer and use Notepad or Opera to view it. Has this changed? Can it be moved?

This is just a guess but have you tried moving it to that location inside Windows and then opening it in Opera?

You need to tell Opera in which folder the file is located.

So you need to move it first and then tell Opera the new location.

If I move it I think Opera 12 will not find it and create a new one in the same location in the Profile. Correct?

Well....that worked rather well! 🙂 Strange why they just do not let us choose the location more directly.
              Anyway, its done. Many thanks!

Does anyone know where all the settings are located? styles/user, operaprefs.ini? Do not see any file called settings.ini unfortunately. What else should be back up in Opera? The whole Profile folder can get big because it stores the Cache.

In the profile folder. Operaprefs.ini contains most of your preferences.

The best thing to do is to backup the whole profile folder.

For anyone who didn't get it, in Manage bookmarks there is a button named File on the toolbar which displays a menu including Open which will open a bookmarks.adr file as your active file (and obviously close whichever file you were using before). The same menu can also be found as a submenu when you right-click a bookmark in the panel, if you prefer. Though you could also change it in opera:config directly, but that may result in the file being overwritten (if it exists).

An alternative approach to this particular question - on that same menu is a Save command, which allows you to save your bookmarks as a new file, but doesn't remove the old file. (And yes, Save does make the new file active.)
