Hi @mirandadealler, go to opera://flags/#site-tiles, select "Disabled" from the drop-down, and restart the Opera.

I found the site which seems to be called Experiments (?). It showed me a particular "site tiles" box which was marked Disabled (by default). I changed it to Default and restarted Opera but everything was the same. I deleted the unwanted bits of the Start Menu and restarted it again and they still came back. thank you for taking an intelligent interest in my problem.

I meant I deleted the unwanted bits of speed dial not the unwanted bits of the Start Menu. Sorry

You are using a A/B test build. Try downloading the latest build and see if changes something.

              No, sadly, it doesn't.

Whenever I open Opera now it shows me a little message "your preferences cannot be read and so changes to settings won't be saved". I can't find preferences in the Help menu so I don't know what they are or how to put them right. Everything else seems unchanged except this message and the Speed Dial.

I am quite a long term user of Opera but nothing special. I would never opt to use a test build.

It's not exactly something that you opt, it's a a/b test build send by the server to some people.

Whenever I open Opera now it shows me a little message "your preferences cannot be read and so changes to settings won't be saved".

It means that Opera can't read/write in the profile folder or in the preferences file.

think it must have been a mistake to send it to me. Is there some way to undo the A/B update?

Not necessarily, there must be criteria for the a/b test builds.

                    Try renaming Opera's profile folder.

                      how do I do that?

I found my preferences file which hasn't been accessed since August 17th 17.07pm presumably that's when the Opera update was unable to read it.

Go to that folder using Windows Explorer or similar program and rename the folder's name. You can check the path in OMenu > About Opera.

I found about Opera but not OMenu. I'm using 31.0.1889.174. Would there be any useful information on this page?

If I deleted and re-installed Opera might it be cured? and would I be able to retrieve my bookmarks or would they be lost?

                          thanks

                          Sally

It's the menu that contains about opera, so you found it.

Rename the profile folder so you will can check it.

thank you -- you are being very patient with me.

I found the profile folder and opened it. I found the preferences file. I could not see how to re-name them.

Are you thinking that I will rename it and then have two copies, one the original and one my renamed copy which I can then check?

Right click on "Opera Stable", there should be a rename entry in the menu. Click on it and rename the folder to "Opera Stable Old" or something like that.

Yep, this is the idea. If the prtoblem is solved then there is/was an issue with your old profile; if not then you can just bring back your data by renaming back the old profile.

I'm sorry, it doesn't offer rename. It's the "Search, search with, copy and print" on the right click

The folder seems to be marked as requiring Administrator access.

Got it! On the main page (http://www.opera.com/) DO NOT click on "Download now" button, otherwise youll get the [31.0.1889.207], wich is not ok!
Instead, scroll down and click on "Opera for computers" and then click on the link "Prefer to install Opera later? Download the offline package." That version of Opera [31.0.1889.174] doesnt have those annoying site tiles (disabled by default)

Hi, no, I am not, sarky one. I am on Opera. And it's not working. I have been on Opera four probably 10 years and it has never malfunctioned before.

Is there an expert administrator thread or do I just have to delete and re-install -- and if I do this will I lose all my bookmarks.

Perhaps i will shift to Firefox and then shift back -- firefox will pick up my Opera book marks and then when I re-install Opera it will pick up the firefox bookmarks.

                                            That should so it?
