I'm seeing a small box on the top left of the opening screen which says: VPN. When I click on it it says: VPN disconnected. 0B data transferred this month. You have unlimited VPN data.

Can someone explain to this olde Luddite what this is and whether or not I have do something? Thank you in advance.

@ljfried You've enabled Opera's free VPN in settings and now you are seeing the icon/button to enable/disable it.

        See https://help.opera.com/en/latest/features/#VPN

@leocg thank you but I have no idea what VPN is or what it does. Is this something I do want or is it not needed?

VPN, technically, is defined as a Virtual Private Network. In Opera's case, it refers to an optional browser feature that a user can employ to cause their browser connections to websites to first be routed through an Opera (or subcontracted) server instead of going directly to the desired website. That way, the data going to the website looks like it came from the geographic location of the VPN server instead of the normal geolocation related to the user's Internet provider. This can be useful in bypassing a website's sniffing that restricts or tweaks content going to the user's presumed locale. Some users try to use it to bypass national censorship against visiting certain blacklisted website addresses by instead first routing data to the VPN server, but such bypassing can easily also be blocked by a determined censoring agency.

In general, if you don't know what a VPN is, you almost certainly don't need it.

@leocg do you throttle, or does your vpn sites suck that bad?

i'm at 400+ Mbps and once I use, and yes, I get it, this is a browser FREE VPN, but it goes down to 34 Mbps that's crap bro!

@gregraygun When you enable VPN in settings page, there is a warning about speed.
