@seriousgigi Not exactly. See https://help.opera.com/en/latest/features/#sync

@leocg not exactly? it says you can save
"Bookmarks
History
Settings
Passwords
Open tabs
Pinboards"only one doesnt exist is auto-fill i guess.
auto-fill is also important for me. do you know which file do i need to backup for this (other than AutofillRegex and AutofillStrikeDatabase folders) ?

@seriousgigi What do you call auto-fills? Anyway, it's probably in Web Data.
See https://help.opera.com/en/latest/crashes-and-issues/#backup, it's probably not up to date but still helps.
I would backup the whole profile directory.

@leocg auto-fill means you know when you type smth on url bar or some username bar opera completes it or suggest the ones you already entered before. so you just type first letter of your username and opera shows the whole username.
anyway i copied those folders and it worked.

hi;
- took backup of whole opera folder under appdata
- formatted pc
- copied opera folder back to appdata
- opened opera saw no password stored.
- signed in to recover passwords
- asked me passphrase -which i hear this word for first time in my life-
- i have no idea what passphrase is. another word play?
i have read lots of threads here and i have to say a few things.
first every one here (also opera browser) suggest that if you dont remember your password you should reset passphrase. Are You Joking ? you will lose All Of Your Passwords if you do this. And There Is No Warning At All . it just says "If you forgot your passphrase or want to change this setting" LOL you have to add this line right after that; "you will lose all of your saved passwords if you reset passphrase."
so looks like dead end. but i am 2x angry because @leocg didnt even tell me this. i opened a thread about backup things yesterday and he should have warned me about this by saying "you will lose all of your passwords if you dont know your passphrase." but instead he said copy your whole opera folder. and what? i lost every single password. thank you!
i hate this sync thing. 10 years ago, i could preserve all of my passwords just by copying opera folder. meh....

@seriousgigi
Try Chromepass - https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/chromepass.html
Give it your old, backed up passwords file, enter your old Windows password if asked and it is possible (not sure however) that chromepass could open it. -

@donq i dont have windows password, because i dont use.
and i solved it with an interesting way <there should be a bulb icon here> and i guess it is a bug. but i wont explain it here because right now i am too angry.also couldnt get addons despite having both backup folder and signed in. in chrome right after you sign in you get all of your addons installed that account before. opera should have done same thing.
update i can get addons in addon settings by activating developer mode and loading manually from extension folder. i am feeling so good so far after stupid windows errors. i was dealing with constant wifi connection lost because new windows (not 11) can not install proper drivers. i was about to buy a new wifi-adapter but finally fixed it by installing windows 8 driver lol.

@seriousgigi If you have never set up a passphrase and Sync asks you to provide one, it's most probably referring to your old Opera account password, that was used to encrypt your synced saved passwords.
If you can't remember that old password, the only solution is to reset the passphrase, what also resets the synced data, and you can start syncing everything again.

@seriousgigi When you click on the link to reset the passphrase, there is a warning about your data being removed from the servers.
There couldn't be one about losing passwords locally because it's not what happens. Or shouldn't be at least.

@leocg now i am signed in. i have all of my passwords and other data but dont remember my passphrase. so just in case, i want to reset my passphrase and make a new one.
how to keep all of my data?
-
leocg Moderator Volunteer last edited by
@seriousgigi Only the data on the Sync server will be deleted, the one stored in your devices should be kept.
Just in case, logout from Sync before resetting passphrase and do a backup. -

@leocg ok. i also wanna delete opera folder for clean start so which files do i need to backup can you make a list?
files:
Favicons, History, Bookmarks, Bookmarks Extras? (what is this?), also Bookmarks.bak(?), Shortcuts, Visited Linksfolders:
Sessions, AutofillRegex, AutofillStrikeDatabasealso why did you say logout first? copying files without logging out is not recommended?

@seriousgigi Just rename the profile folder, that way you will still have your old data.
And the logout is to avoid eventual problems with synchronization messing up with your local data when you reset your synced data/passphrase.

@leocg ok. i did all of them but one thing i didnt understand. i resetted my passphrase but opera didnt ask me about new password. i wanna change that password, this is the reason why i resetted my passphrase in the first place.
if i can not change my passphrase then whats the point for all of this? because opera will ask my passphrase again after i format my pc again and i can not provide since i dont know my passphrase.

@seriousgigi To reset your Opera account password, go to https://auth.opera.com/account/edit-profile

@leocg i know my opera account password i am trying to change passphrase. these are two different things right?
-

@seriousgigi Just go to the same place where you set it up last time: Menu > Connect as your username > Click on the cogwheel icon > Cryptography options > Select the option to encrypt all synced data with a passphrase > Enter a new passphrase.
However, as discussed before in this topic, it seems that Opera was asking for an old password and not the passphrase, am I correct?
If that is the case, just resetting passphrase/synced data should be enough. -

@leocg i dont remember if it is old password because since i mostly store passwords and dont remember anything about passphrase it should be old password but like i said before i tried more than 10 different passwords and none of them worked.
anyway thx for that i changed my passphrase finally.
