@sgunhouse I was opening the start page. Opera start crashing 2 versions ago. I finally found out the issue. It's due to the ffmpeg hell in opera. For some reason the libffmpeg.so provided by opera doesn't open, for instance, Udemy videos which is a pain in the butt.
For a long time I've been using a script I did that, after every update, would replace the libffmpeg.so deployed by Opera with a symbolic link to the one from chromium-codecs-ffmpeg and it has been working fine, I mean, it was a minor annoyance I could live with.
Unfortunately, I've found out that chromium-codecs-ffmpeg was recently replaced by the chromium-ffmpeg snap, which meant I no longer had chromium-codecs-ffmpeg,
So, yesterday, as soon as I found out what was triggering the issue I've fixed it. I've found out a package from arch linux, from where I took the required lib and replaced the one from Opera.
I wonder why Opera doesn't fix this once and for all.~/gnfpt

@sgunhouse you mean you've chosen not to support some types of video formats? If so, that's really sad to know.

@leocg can't you package it with dependencies so that when a user is installing Opera, it will trigger the installation of other packages need to provide all the Video formats, instead of having users browsing the internet figuring out how to solve it?
Also, you're aware that Brave and Vivaldi don't have these sort of issues, right?

@gnfpt Vivaldi doesn't support proprietary codecs by default either, technically. But, because one of their QA guys is really into Linux, he wrote a script to fetch and update to a libffmpeg.so that includes support for proprietary codecs that's compatible with the current major version of Chromium your Vivaldi is using. The script is now kind of integrated into Vivaldi. By doing this, it might be considered a legal workaround. Maybe they even checked with their lawyers. Opera might be able to do the same legally. But, judging by their lack of a solution, it seems Opera is trying to stay far away from any chance of a licensing violation.
Opera can automatically use the libffmpeg installed for Chrome if it's compatible. Of course, with Opera not always being in sync with the Chromium version Chrome uses, that's a problem.
I suspect we'll have to keep relying on user-provided scripts and solutions.

@burnout426 from a user's PoV, if the user doesn't have to do anything and right of the "box" all works as expected, it feels like it's supported. With my user's hat, I really don't care about the tech details of how they got support for libffmpeg.so. I expect all my browsers to support what is common on the internet these days.
You have a bunch of applications using libffmpeg.so - signal, postman, atom, discord just to name the ones I have installed. Are these all outlaw apps? -
