Last Tuesday, the 27th of July, I was confronted with a continuous restart of my PC after an automatic update was installed (version 77.0.4054.172). Even after removing and reinstalling Opera with version 77.0.4054.277 the problem persisted. Am using Windows 7 Ultimate. PC Is definitely virus free and was now forced to install Firefox after which problem disappeared. Plse clarify.

@richtendahl Most probably Opera has nothing to do with it and the fact that you started facing the issue after an Opera update was just a coincidence.

If you are sure that this problem originates from Opera, then almost only possibilty to cause restart would be video drivers (assuming there are no hardware problems). In event log, what is recorded as the cause of restart? Driver errors usually got recorded. If there is nothing, then either overheating or power problems may cause restarts too. File system errors should be recorded in event log again.
Do browsers, sharing same rendering engine (Chrome, Edge) work well?

Thanks for yr feedback
The following error has been recorded:
[0706/115710.533:ERROR:registration_protocol_win.cc(102)] CreateFile: Het systeem kan het opgegeven bestand niet vinden. (0x2)
Translation: "The system cannot find the specified file (0x2)"
Integrity check (sfc /scannow) was successful.
Error is reproducible. Have no problems with Mozilla Firefox or any other program now installed.Hope this helps in finding a solution

Thank you for looking!
Such kind of errors can't cause restarts (directly), thereby I suspect some kind of undetected driver issue or hardware problem anyway. Those are hard to investigate here on forums
Because your Opera won't open, you can't change its settings to disable hardware accelereation for graphic driver - this would be first recommendation otherwise.Have you tried Edge? Firefox uses very different engine, Edge is internally much more like Opera.
(About specific error - see also https://forums.opera.com/topic/30191/opera-creating-debug-log-file-for-every-html-file-i-open-in-opera-browser/16, this is certainly not the source of restarts.)

Now running like a charm.
